First I have to say its so hard to remove your person feelings about something you've been apart of for over 26 years. How a person gets clean is different for every person. What works for one may not work for another. At the core its all about the demons inside you – the events that happened in your life to push you to need that mood altering, numbing substance just to deal with life. For some even after they have removed the drugs or alcohol from their system their will to live may not come back. I have personally known a few and they are not of this world anymore sadly. How Lazarus chose to get sober is one of the hardest and dangerous. I have to say if anyone reads this book and is struggling with addiction to please reach out and get help and figure out the best way for YOU.
As I stated before its hard for me to review this book without putting in personal feelings. Fictionally speaking Lazarus ended up defying the odds against him and beat his addiction and when he saw Bethany in the same predicament he had been in years before he couldn't just walk away from this woman lying in an ally OD-ing. These two strangers had a common bond in addiction that morphed into a caring supportive relationship. The new Probies were front in center in this book – Edison, Cyrus, Reeve and a new one that comes from Ross's fighting guys and they certainly are colorful characters that should have very interesting stories when we get them.
I did love the story of Lazarus and Bethany if that didnt come across above. I've loved every story from this author and the last two books she has written have been so different as they delved into real life issues – mental illness and addiction. She never ceases to amaze me with the stories she comes up with.
Bethany hasn't had anyone in her life that cared about her for a long time. To her, Lazarus is almost too good to be true. He'll just have to prove to her that she doesn't have to do it alone.
"... do you have any idea how rare it is in life to find a soul that is cut up in all the same ways as your own? I think when you find that person who can understand everything you have been through because they have been through it as well, you need to hold onto them."
Swoon!! Lazarus took over another spot in my heart filled with these Navesink Bank men. These hard, tough men that bring me to my knees. They have the exterior of fighters, mafia, loan sharks, private investigators, former gang leaders, badass bikers just to mention a few. The ones people easily stereotype and assume they're someone they're not. Yeah, they can be bad when needed, but underneath they are the most gentle, humble and loving men. Each one so different, but each one so perfect.
And the women in their life are just as great. Bethany fits right in and was the absolute perfect fit for Lazarus. I loved this story and I cannot wait to get more of these men. I'm not sure if I want Pagan's or Cyrus' story more, but I know with absolute certainty I'll love whichever it is.
