This book is a valuable addition to the library of any mindful executive, manager, or organization development professional.

For those who would better understand how to deliver on their organization's customer promise, this is a book that will offer examples based on experience and insights earned over thirty-five years (E.g., The book also includes an appendix of validated assessment tools that have been used by over fifty-seven enterprises). Through the shared examples, the author explains how the customer promise is a "determiner" for both culture and the right leadership approach. A major insight revealed through the examples and diagnostics is how, over time, culture takes form by what is required to deliver on the customer promise for the given type of enterprise. According to the author, the term culture should not be confused with a compilation of peoples' values. Rather, the differences in types of culture and enterprise are critical to clearly understand when leaders go about setting direction, gathering commitment, and building business capability. The author discusses the four basic types of enterprise, defining in detail the customer promise for each one as well as their dynamic and evolving nature. I highly recommend this book. Dan Guenther

I rarely write reviews, but this book is exceptional and so packed with useful information and insight for business owners (or anyone contemplating starting a business) I wanted to share my thoughts. The premise is pretty simple -- different types of businesses require different leadership approaches and management skills. And while that makes intuitive sense to most business owners, it's easy to overlook. In fact, most business management and leadership books skip right past this looking for a one-size-fits-all leadership approach. The author does a superb job of drilling down into the different types of businesses and exploring what leadership approaches and management skills are most effective. It's very well written, with a wonderful blend of theory, practical application, and interesting examples. I own a business and have read many books on leadership and management topics. This is one of the few that really delivers value and provided me with some concrete ideas for improving our operations and my approach to leadership within our organization.

I read a lot of business books that have something insightful to share, but many also seem to be for a business, or situation, differant than mine.
Their solutions were 'one size fits all', and that simply can't be true. This book was the fist I've read that acknowledges that there are differant business types and that there are different relationships between customers, employees and managers in each business type. By understanding my business type, I can better evaluate other programs for applicability.

A fine addition to anyone's business library

This is one of the more engaging business books I've read in quite a while. The book is concerned with a problem that occurs far too often in too many companies in the 21st century. Business leaders try to impose a "one size fits all" management style on their company rather than tailoring their style to the specifics of what their particular organization does. The author addresses how to determine what type of organization you're leading and then offers a plan to help you connect with both your customers promise as well as the unique culture of your organization.

Utilizing well known examples like the clash between Steve Jobs and John Sculley at Apple along with several lesser known but equally illustrative examples, the author offers a variety of paths to achieve new and better organizational structures. The book is straight forward and well-written and I would highly recommend it to thoughtful business leaders who want to take their companies in more productive directions.
