Over the past several months, I have been trying to steer us from an authoritarian, "you must obey because I'm your parent" style of parenting to a more grace based, Jesus like, relationships are more important than blind obedience, grace filled family. It is HARD. Hard because it challenges me more, it challenges the way I grew up and the habits I already have in place. But it is also GOOD. Good because I feel like I am doing it more Biblically.
And this book, oh this book, came into my life at just the right time.
It is FULL of takeaway nuggets, real life application, references to the Bible, other parents' experiences, thought provoking questions, and prayers. It is set up to easily do with a book club or small group. There is so much to think about and apply, I can't recommend getting the book enough.
Parenting is singularly one of the most difficult challenges you will ever undertake. You often feel unappreciated, like the bad guy, guilty or that you are doing it wrong. This book is a real encouragement to me, and hopefully to you as well. You should get a copy and request your library get one as well.
This is a child-training book. A book on parenting.
And I love how those two things are meshed together and help me to analyze and express how I want my family to look in the future.
It's all about goals, vision, values, priorities.
You need to see that future picture of success for your family to know what you must do now to get there. By examining your future picture, you can make a plan to implement for success. Jesus must be the foundation for your goals.
I have been using this book to teach our Sunday school class for a while now and we're enjoying it and learning so much about leadership from Jesus! We've all had some lively discussions. We're convicted to "put our egos on the altar" and align our attitudes. I adore having some older couples agree with the book's teachings and describe how they raised their children.
I believe this book especially appeals to men, to dads. It's a leadership book. I know my husband's only reading material is online...or leadership books. This book really targets dads in ways they can understand, especially if they're not regular readers - with bullets, flow charts, pyramids, headings...all this makes it easier to read and comprehend the material.
I cannot recommend this book enough - for everyone - parents, pastors, teachers - anyone who teaches or deals with children or leadership.
Each of these authors has "been there, done that." They've learned some hard lessons about leading a family and they graciously pour out their own experiences to invite others to join them in leading families like Jesus. I also love all the personal stories interjected into the book. Women and men who share how they seek to lead in their homes like Jesus ... honest about the struggles and humble in the successes.
This book is not a how to guide, though. There's no list to check off or steps to follow. Rather, it's an invitation to learn more about Jesus and then apply what you learn in your home. I can't think of one family who wouldn't benefit from the principles in this book.
It is divided into four components -- Heart, Head, Hands, and Habits. In each section, each of the authors discusses the component based on his or her background and position in life. They each open up their hearts to share stories pertinent to the section, and their examples are wonderful opportunities to learn and reflect.
Each component is Biblically strong and includes examples of how Jesus used these components in his ministry. Additional examples are provided from parents who have been there and have learned from the principles shared in the book. Their stories add a great deal of heart and insight to the book.
In addition, each chapter includes actionable exercises, suggestions, or tips for becoming the best possible parent with Jesus as a role model. One of my favorite items is Tricia Goyer's method of praying for her children. She prays for their:
Head - that they will always lift their heads to look to the Lord and that they will allow God to life their heads when they are hurt or discouraged,
Shoulders - so they will learn to let God carry their burdens,
Knees - that they will get on their knees before God regularly, and
Toes - that a community of believers will surround them and keep them on their toes!
This can be easily remembered by thinking of the song "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and is a great reminder of how to pray for each child.
This book will be my gift of choice at all future baby showers!
