5.0 out of 5 stars "LeaderSHOP" is the right name for this book... we all learn best IN the shop using the RIGHT tools.
By max murdock on November 3, 2018
LeaderSHOP is a cogent and succinct delivery of today's best "thoughts" about DOING leadership. The interview style is conducive to easily imagining one's self inside the conversation; I found myself opening my mouth to add my two bits more than once, so here's my chance. I particularly enjoyed the BEHAVIORS section. This is, I think, where a leader's style either builds or dismantles "delight" in a workplace or work community. Everything else is merely TALK, until a leader begins to employ empathy, ROK, etiquette, and humility in the trenches. The phrase, genuinely spoken: "That's how I see it, but I could be wrong; how do YOU see it?" is one example of how to immediately soften moments of stress, contention, and disagreement, and foster real understanding and trust between leaders, followers, and the always most-important agent of change...the customer. Duncan makes a critical point in Chapter 39 about Balance when he quotes Vanderkam..."Done is better than perfect." After all, "perfect" in the workplace should always be "out there," pulling us forward and up, but always the carrot just out of reach, keeping us humble, teachable, and working in the SHOP.
