Format: Hardcover
Those who have read one or more of John Balboni's previous books (notably Lead Your Boss, Lead by Example, Lead with Purpose, and 12 Steps to Power Presence) and/or his blog posts already know that he is among the most intelligent and most knowledgeable of contemporary business thinkers. I hold both him and his work in very high regard.

What we have in his latest is a "little" book offering huge value. Each of his 101 tips and techniques could well be indispensable in almost any given situation, depending on the circumstances, of course, but all are based on the scope and depth of Baldoni's real-world experience. He has an insatiable curiosity to understand what works, what doesn't, and why so that he can then share what he has learned with as many other people as possible.

The material is carefully organized within three sections: Self (Tips 1-20), Colleagues (21-53), and Organization (54-101). As Baldoni explains, that sequence is obviously intentional and eminently sensible: "Leadership has often been defined as a journey. The journey begins with the starting point, and that starting point is the self...One of the challenging aspects of leadership, if not the most challenging, is leading one's peers...Since few leaders do anything by themselves, it is necessary to build a coalition of willing partners who believe in your cause - and what's more, believe in you...What does it take to lead an organization? A commitment to service, specifically a willingness to put the organization first so that it succeeds [and a] commitment to making the positive difference for oneself, the team, and the organization."

I appreciate Balboni's skillful use of several reader-friendly devices that include "Research Says..." section to introduce (i.e.

This short little 200-page guide offers basic concepts, attitudes and approaches to leadership related to managing yourself, your colleagues and your organization. The ideas presented (such as, compromise, character, coaching, connection, curiosity, commitment) are general and basic, and might be a good fit as a general road map to give a new manager professional direction. Experienced managers might find this too basic, however, a quick review of this guide could still be helpful in keeping more experienced managers on track. The quick self-assessments and action tips are worth a look.

The most useful aspect of this guide was its positive approach to problem employees, with its focus on open communication and coaching. Keep in mind this little book does not offer many examples or details for application and implementation.

The Leader’s Pocket Guide by John Baldoni is a well organized collection of leadership principles focused on one’s self, colleagues, and organization. In his book, John provides readers with insights on a wide array of topics including:
- Demonstrating character
- Developing confidence
- Inspiring others
- Resolving conflict
- Coaching and rewarding others
- Aligning the organization to shared goals

I like The Leader’s Pocket Guide for its immediately implementable advice relevant to leaders at all levels within an organization. Specifically, I enjoyed the action tips, self-assessments, and ‘Think About…’ sections of John’s book, all of which challenge the reader to reflect on his or her leadership acumen to identify and improve on areas of weakness.

I found the layout of The Leader’s Pocket Guide to be advantageous for use in developing one’s subordinates. The individualized leadership lessons enable managers to conduct training and/or group discussion sessions focused on a particular principle. Additionally, this segmentation allows the book to be used in daily reflection to help one hone his or her own leadership skills.

The insightful, actionable leadership principles presented in this well organized book makes The Leader’s Pocket Guide a StrategyDriven recommended read.

All the Best,
Nathan Ives
