The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Leadership is not about personality; it’s about behavior—an observable set of skills and abilities. When the co-authors of The Leadership Challenge, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner, first set out to discover what effective leaders do when they’re at their personal best, they collected thousands of stories from ordinary people—the moments they recalled when asked to think of a peak leadership experience. Despite differences in culture, gender, age, and other variables, these “personal best” stories revealed similar patterns of behavior. The authors discovered that when leaders experience their personal best, they display five core practices: they Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, and Encourage the Heart. Jim and Barry called these behaviors The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership. Together, these practices provide the basis for The Leadership Challenge.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Three decades after Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner conducted their initial research, The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership model continues to prove its effectiveness as a clear, evidence-based path to achieving the extraordinary—for individuals, teams, organizations, students, educators, and communities.

Model the Way

Leaders establish principles concerning the way people (constituents, peers, colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and the way they should pursue goals. Leaders create standards of excellence and set an example for others to follow. They put up signposts when people feel unsure of where to go or how to get there. Leaders create opportunities for victory.

Inspire a Shared Vision

Leaders passionately believe they can make a difference. They envision the future and create an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become. Through their magnetism and persuasion, leaders enlist others in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see exciting possibilities for the future.

Encourage the Heart icon from The Leadership Challenge

Challenge the Process

Leaders search for opportunities to change the status quo. They look for innovative ways to improve the organization. In doing so, they experiment and take risks. Since complex change threatens to overwhelm people and stifle action, leaders set interim goals so that people can achieve small wins as they work toward larger objectives. Effective leaders unravel bureaucracy when it impedes action. And, because leaders know that taking risks involves mistakes and failures, they accept occasional disappointments as opportunities to learn.

Enable Others to Act

Leaders foster collaboration and build spirited teams. They actively involve others. Leaders understand that mutual respect sustains extraordinary efforts. They strive to create an atmosphere of trust and human dignity. They strengthen others, making each person feel capable and powerful.

Encourage the Heart

Accomplishing extraordinary things in organizations is hard work. To keep hope and determination alive, leaders recognize the contributions that individuals make. In every winning team, the members need to share in the rewards of their efforts, so leaders celebrate accomplishments. They make people feel like heroes.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

In the Seventh Edition of The Leadership Challenge, renowned leadership researchers and educators James Kouzes and Barry Posner deliver a practical and straightforward discussion of exemplary leadership. Grounded in research and written by premier authorities in the field, this book offers insightful commentary on the complex interpersonal dynamics of the workplace. It positions leadership as both a skill to be learned and a relationship to be nurtured.

Exemplary leaders aspire to achieve more and inspire their followers to be their best. The latest edition of this leadership classic demonstrates how contemporary leaders can do exactly that while bridging the gap between getting things done and making extraordinary things happen. It also includes many new real-world leadership examples and anecdotes from international sources and maintains a laser focus on key workplace issues.

Readers will learn about leaders’ critical roles in developing and maintaining organizational health and understand the modern shift toward team-oriented work relationships. They’ll discover how to break through the cynicism that pervades much of the contemporary workforce and leverage the electronic global village to deliver optimal results.

As the world of business continues to evolve and transform at increasingly rapid rates, the most effective leaders will keep pace with the changes while the merely average will fall behind. The Leadership Challenge, Seventh Edition, explains how to lead and manage employees who work differently, are motivated differently, and have different expectations than they did a decade ago. It is your roadmap to staying current, relevant, and effective in the modern workplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars In 17 words only you get the best teaching about how to practice leadership
Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2023
This book provides the five practices (and is really something you can practice, i.e. do every day with your team, regardless of your personality) of leadership. Together these 5 leadership practices are easily remembered as they are described succintly and memorably: 1 - model the way; 2 - inspire a shared vision; 3- challenge the process; 4 - enable others to act; 5 - encourage the heart. That is set from the beginning the book does a deep dived for all of these based on data that the authors have been colected since 1982 until bow this edition date (2023). Basically this mean 1- being an example in deeds/actions rather than mere words; 2- provide a direction for the future which entices and excites everyone your lead; 3- be disruptive and dont take nothing for granted, improve all that can be improved; 4 teach and encourage your team so they increase their self-confidence; and 5 appeal to and recognize their emotions for example by celebrating big achievements. The one main message of the books is that if you do these practices routinely then when your team or organization faces a huge challenge or setback, odds are that you will overcome it successfully unlike teams that are not as well led in practice as this book recommends. Some books throw at you everything about leadership and every detail, and in many cases just based on n=1 or authors opinions, some contradictory and not allways applicable in all cases, By contrast this books seems to me is the best in the subject and is the most succint as it focus in practices that really apply everywhere, backed by data. Finally this 2023 7th edition is relevant because it is post covid. Thus addresses all the new challenges such as retaining employees and working and leading remotely but productively.
