Despite the title, this is not your typical book about leadership. Instead, it is a book about the role of leadership in the creative process, as well as in innovation. The book arises out of the creativity and innovation training programs the author delivers and from his reading and study of creativity and the literature on organizations.
Creativity and innovation are key and necessary elements for organizations and their leaders to master today. The author believes that the foundation for creative, innovative leadership is Ken Wilbur’s Integral Theory. Integral Theory is a totality theory involving matter, body, mind, soul and spirit organized into four quadrants commonly referred to as AQAL – all quadrants, all levels.
The four quadrants reflect the individual and the collective and the interior and the exterior. After explaining the four quadrant integral model, the author goes on to explain the relationship and view of creativity and innovation to each of the quadrants. The author concludes the book with a final two chapters containing 30 tips for increasing business creativity and 20 tips for increasing personal creativity.
The author packs a lot of information into this book. Therefore, it is not necessarily a quick read. At times, I found myself rereading certain sections to make sure I fully understood the information the author was presenting. This book will definitely make you think about what the author is presenting.
If you are interested in the study of creativity and innovation or if you are a leader looking to learn how to facilitate creativity and innovation in your organization, then by all means you should read this book. The book’s content will make your efforts well worthwhile!
