Imagine taking everything Ken Blanchard has ever written that was worth reading and put it in one book. That's what you have here. This is a gold mine. Regardless of who you lead (yourself, your family, your department, your company, your non-profit organization, your HOA, etc) this is the book for you!

There is tons of good information in this book, however I am baffled at the motives of the author(s) constantly referring/referencing/footnoting their own previously written books. In almost every chapter he refers to himself and co-authors in the third person ("As Ken Blanchard writes in ___ book".) It is very distracting to me and I can't determine if it is a shameless plug to sell you his other works or if it is some attempt at lending credibility to his point. If he wrote the previous book as an original idea, then he has no need to reference or quote himself. He makes excellent, thought-provoking points, but as Cynthia R. states in her book review, "Good info, too many plugs for his other books." (see how annoying that is)

The Ken Blanchard approach recognizes that the the old ways of leading organizations just won't work effectively anymore. People are too savvy and intelligent to allow themselves to be bullied and used like shovels, word processors, or telephones. Our language and practices must change to reflect the hopes and dreams of what is best for all of humankind. This book presents a practical philosophy and its tactical application to achieve just that. Could not recommend it higher to the theorist or the practitioner.

At first, I thought this was only for bigger organizations. I'm in Direct Sales for a makeup company and I almost stopped reading midway through. I'm so glad I finished. There is a great chapter on empowerment, which is huge in the company I work with. The chapters on leadership were very informative and helpful. As others reviewed, there are many references to other books, however, I didn't think this was a bad thing. I did purchase The One Minute Manager though and had I read Leading at a Higher Level first, I wouldn't have bothered with the other. This book gives all the main points from the other in one chapter.

I started reading this before I started a new job... was pleasantly surprised it's recommended reading for administrative positions. For those who want to take leadership (not to be confused with managing) to a new level.

Good general read but not much depth. Also, info is based on research and not personal experiences by the author.

Why I decided only two stars is the political leaning in a self-help book. I was turned off my the inappropriate stick on one of our past presidents using an untrue event. Then to prop up a news agency as something that it is not to further support the authors' political bias.

I don't want political leanings (and incorrect political info) in a self-help or business book.

I also had no problems downloading the free version of the entire book on the kindle app for my droid phone. This is a great reference for training and leadership--everything from leading yourself, teams, companies, and learning how to coach others, as well as yourself. The authors of the Blanchard companies cover it all here!

This book spans the range from managing oneself through to leading a large organization, focusing on leadership and 'soft skills'. The key recommendation is that the development stage of the person / team / organization must be assessed and will determine the appropriate style of leadership to deploy. The authors refer to this system as Situational Leadership II.

Both starting and experiences managers and team leaders will find much valuable advice here. Having read the book cover to cover, I believe that the sections on leading organization-wide change can be skimmed by many readers, but all should read the advice on developing an individual leadership style. Overall, a great book to have in any leader's personal library and one I wish I had read many years ago at the start of my career.
