He challenges readers to critically examine the lives and careers of leaders to determine what characteristics are common to all and to ascertain what qualities each reader might bring to maximize their leadership potentialities. In this book, Mr. Douglas refers to notable personalities such as Stephen Covey and Ken Blanchard, in differentiating between leadership and management concepts, defining the three main styles of leadership, and strengthening the reader's knowledge of leadership power bases.
He very perceptively states that "...One of the keys to being a truly effective leader is having strong ethical values and making all your decisions and choices based on these values". He reminds readers that a strong moral compass is one of the most fundamental constructs upon which decisions and actions should build.
This book is an excellent guide that can serve young adults well. The sections focussing on self- examination, communication skills and determining one's own leadership style through a series of action steps, are presented in an easy-to-follow fashion, yet in a "hands on" instructional format. Dave Douglas reminds readers that if "we don't know or care where we are going, any road will do". He challenges readers to enhance their success potential by establishing goals and creating personal and professional "road maps" to achieve these goals.
Young adults and those involved in guiding youth will find this book to be a comprehensive collection of the basic concepts that should be considered in supporting young adults as they plan their journey towards success.
The contents summarize the basics and understanding of what is involved in a leadership role in all its forms.
Many people are natural leaders, unaware of their skills until they read a book such as this - and in turn recognize themselves therein as well as boosting their confidence levels.
At last a well-written fundamental book on the essentials of Leadership.
I particularly enjoyed the numerous real life examples of youth making a difference - great inspiration for all of us!
Also, what a great idea to include "Action Steps" which encourage the reader to TAKE ACTION to explore and improve their own leadership abilities. Thank you Dave Douglas for such an important and valuable resource!
In an inspired and refreshing approach delivered from the perspective of a truly experienced professional, Dave captures the essence of leadership with his unique style.
An approach that combines effective anecdotes with very practical examples provides all of us with excellent insight to the components of leadership that are so often hard to define in practical terms.
