EDIT: 5/06/15 Just got back from a few hardware stores & confirmed the size tap needed for these hoses.
THEY REQUIRE A METRIC 14 X 1.5 TAP. I took a hose with me and this was the only size that worked. Just finished my third hand. Could have saved a considerable amount of $$$ by buying one prebuilt considering I had to buy all the tools, and then buy the correct size tools again. With that being said the hoses work ok, could be a little stiffer though. One hose is barely strong enough to hold the weight of an 80mm fan. I realize they are designed for other uses Than this.
Ordered a second set, this time they are listed from a different vendor but have the same exact model #
Vendor WOLF668899 requires a METRIC 14 X 1.5 TAP
Vendor Eforstore requires a 1/2-20nf TAP and are different color than the set I got from Wolf668899. Also colors are different.
AMAZON THESE ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PRODUCTS, PLEASE GIVE THEM UNIQUE MODEL #'s AND DESCRIPTION SO THE NEXT CUSTOMER DOESNT HAVE TO SPEND $60 ON EXTRA TOOLS AND HAVE MISMATCHED PRODUCTS!
For your info.... you can get inexpensive aluminum bar remnants in many sizes if you search hard enuff. Amazon has sellers selling them, auction websites too. I got a 1/2" thick 5x7 bar for 10 bux shipped from an auction website. Got the pipes and test clips from Amazon.
These pipes are a bit stiff at first but do loosen up. The finish of these isn't perfect. There's some thin pieces of plastic left over from the plastic molding process.but nothing a razor blade can't easily fix. This price was a bargain. So for approx 20 bux for materials... and 5 bux for a tap set I got on an auction site.... I built my own third hand for waaaaay less than the sparkfun item or others I've seen. You could get a larger piece of aluminum than I did and still come out waaaaay ahead of the "kits"... my cost was a bit higher since I had to buy the drill press :-). I'm cheap... so I sought a deal on that too. Northern tool had a sale on a discontinued floor standing 16 speed 3/4 hp press.. 149.00.... and it works just fine for my purposes. I know there are way better drills but at way higher prices too.
I used these to build a third hand for soldering and working on small parts. The design is based on rstraugh's instructable. (I'd link to it, but Amazon takes down reviews with any kind of external link, even if it's obfuscated. Not very helpful in this case.)
The tubes worked out pretty well. I attached alligator clips to the pointy ends with machine screws and drilled & tapped holes to attach them to the baseplate. They offer just the right balance between holding strength and flexibility.
Bought the associated assembly wrench as a necessary solution for getting immediately quick results, without question.
At 4 bucks per 6-pack, I wouldn't have a problem buying again. Especially, now that the wrench is already in my tool box.
Although, it isn't critical for dry applications..
The only down-side to simply installing this system "right out of the box" is finding prep work.
Individual parts have potential debris obstructions. Aka, "flashing." This only applies to the use of a water/coolant system.
Be advised that a noticeable amount of injection-mold flashing was on nearly every part.
Take the time to "debur" the re-work, removing heavy excess "flashing."
With minimal experience., All this takes is a sharp exact-o knife. A hobbyist's solution to a debur task.
Still worth it. 5 stars.
Using a step bit at the 7/16th setting I was not very successful in tapping threads with my HF tap set .
I moved up to the 15/32nd step bit and was able to tap. To be on the safe side I wound up hot gluing both sides of the line after threading it in since there was only about one and a half threads in the outlet plate cover
