The application was simple - pair them with my Wink Hub and receive remote notifications in the event of a leak. Sounds like a great concept. And it was - for all of about 3 months.
I have to say that the initial setup process was fairly smooth. For the most part, they connected to my hub pretty easily (although I did have to wait around 30 seconds past the warning screen that pops up on the Wink app when things appear to be taking longer than they should). I even tested them out and they all sensed water and notified me exactly as I had originally planned. I just had to set up a few robots on the Wink app, and everything was up and running just as I had intended. And that's when I ran out and bought some more. What a mistake that turned out to be.
After 3 months, almost on the nose, I started receiving low battery warnings from the first batch of devices that I had installed. This happened when the app said the device batteries were at 20%. Then, 3 days later, those same devices started going offline - one after the other. I guess 20% wasn't really 20%. So now I had a batch of dead sensors with far less notice than I feel I should have received. But that wasn't to be the worst of it...
For any device that had already gone offline, it appears that simply changing the battery would not bring it back to life. I tried everything, and the only way I could get it back online was to remove the device from my hub (i.e. the Wink app) completely, reset it, and reconnect it from scratch - which also meant going through the whole process of renaming the device, setting up the robot, etc. No way I was going through that every 3 months!
So then I decided to be proactive about the second batch of devices that I had installed (which, at this point, were all showing around 30% battery life) and change out the batteries before those devices went offline too. The good news is that this second batch of devices did stay online through the battery change. The bad news is that the battery indicators never reset in the Wink app! So now I had devices with 100% full batteries that, according to the Wink app, were getting ready to die. Everything else was working, so I know the devices were still online and polling. But the battery life just wasn't updating. The only cure, you ask? You guessed it - to remove them completely from the hub, reset them, and install them all over again!
So now I'm left with the prospect of, in addition to replacing batteries every 3 months in hard-to-reach places, also having to remove each device from my hub and completely reinstall it no matter what. Not a chance that's happening. Not a chance.
So is this an app problem, a hub problem, or a sensor problem? Honestly, I don't really care. The box says in big letters "WINK COMPATIBLE." But it seems that it's really only compatible for 3 months at a time. And that just doesn't work for me.
3 months may be too late for me to get my hard earned money back. But it's not too late for you. If you have a Wink hub and you want something to help you with leaks, I suggest getting yourself a bucket and a few good towels - because these detectors are not likely to provide you with any better peace of mind than that without a whole lot of work. And, unfortunately, that just doesn't work for me.
The valve paired easily with my smartthings hub though I have not been able to pair the leak sensor. I will update the review with more, if I get it to pair. I still give the valve 5 starts as I am not sure it is a problem with the sensor itself that it can't connect to ST.
