About the Author
Dr. William Lareau is an expert in lean manufacturing systems. Bill served as a manufacturing executive with ITT and General Dynamics. He worked for several years with Ford Motor Company in process improvement and statistical methods; directed an operations research group; and was a division manager for Vie de France. His operational improvement work has benefited a diverse list of clients globally, including Compaq, Chrysler, Lockheed Martin, Philips, Teledyne, Eaton, Budweiser, Motorola, and Newell-Rubbermaid.
Bill recently became a member of The Kaufman Consulting Group, LLC, an implementation services firm. He is the firm's thought leader in the areas of lean operations, implementation, and world-class competitiveness. Bill regularly speaks to executive leadership teams regarding lean systems and the dynamics of organizational change. A licensed psychologist, Bill holds a Ph.D. from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and has been a teaching faculty member at the University of California, University of Dayton, University of Louisville and Loyola College.
In addition to unparalleled industry and consulting experience, Dr. Lareau has published several books, including The American Samuari, Conduct Expected, and The Businessuses of American't and Change.

Lareau correctly argues that for any business to successfully integrate a Lean program into its structure, it needs to develop and sustain overwhelming employee acceptance and involvement in the program. Unfortunately, Lareau's psychological foundations for his theories on human motivations are outdated. Much has been revealed in the field of psychology in the past 15-20 years with which Lareau clearly needs to acquaint himself.
Lareau makes repetitive attempts to motivate the reader to his way of thinking through tiresome war characterization analogies and often unfounded attacks to minimize or discredit past business improvement programs and their proponents in favor of his own.
He attempts to develop and reinforce the belief that Lean requires such levels of training and business restructuring, that the reader must conclude that to successfully implement and sustain Lean, they must invest heavily and for a lengthy duration, in an outside Lean consultant. His books are essentially marketing tools for his own consultant firm.
Incidentally, this book lacks both an index and a bibliography. Perhaps Lareau finds that citing his sources and crediting the specific works of others are an unnecessary inconvenience.
