My 3 year old loves this toy. We bring this in the car or to the restaurant for my son to play with. Since he got it for Christmas, he has finally started to learn phonics which I had previously tried teaching him using flashcards. Like the other posters have mentioned, this toy's music doesn't drive me crazy. It's easier on the nerves than most. The toy has many features including a game in which children are either given the letter name or the sound and asked to locate the corresponding letter. It keeps score so you can monitor progress. The music option lets them play the alphabet song providing they hit the letter keys in order from left to right (like reading). Great toy! I would have rated it 6 stars had that been possible. We've had lots of electronic toys, but this has been mine and my son's favourite. LeapFrog toys are superior.

My niece is two and loves this toy. She plays for hours at a time and likes to mimic the sounds. I always buy educational toys and feel that Leapfrog has toys for all ages and children learn as they play. How can you beat that? If you want your child to be entertained and learn at the same time BUY THIS TOY!

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old for Christmas and have really enjoyed watching her play with it. She sings the alphabet song along with it, which is a treat for me. My 5 year old nephew who is a special needs child also loves this toy, and loves the Letter Sounds mode. It has been dropped down a flight of stairs already and is still working perfectly. The option to turn the sound down is also great. Anyone who has kids knows that the most annoying thing is to hear a toy all the time, and when this is turned down it is definately manageable, and not nearly as distracting.

Ok, my wife purchased the leap frog alpha-pet explorer from a used toy shop (At least that's where we get most of the kids toys, almost brand new, half the price). My boy loved it. Played with it for the first six months constantly. I had some individuals (mainly his speech therapist) state it should be used in moderation, and I agree. However, my son might not be talking as much as other children but he sure knows his alphabet. Ask him to bring some of his fridge phonics letters over (made by the same company) and he can do it by the letters name or sound (he could do this by age two). Would I use this toy as they only thing to teach the alphabet to my son? NO! Do I find it useful in moderation and to supplement other learning methods? Yes!!

*As a side note I have done a fair amount of research into early reading programs, and have had much better results with phonic based material.

I love this alphabet learning toy! We are in the early stages so I am still helping my 2 year old figure it out, I'm sure once he can start guessing them on his own he will be even more proud of himself! it has volume settings so it can be loud when needed, like in the car, but not drive you crazy in a quiet house. The music doesn't get under my skin like some other electronic toys!. We had fun playing with it and noticed it will recognize certain words if you spell them. So far we noticed it with "Cat" "dog" and "Scout"

Two things I would change to make the toy better:

1. Back lighting for the letters that would light up the correct answer if they have gotten it wrong a couple times, to help them when they get frustrated.

2. more enthusiastic "good job's" when they get the letter right. My son sometimes couldn't really tell if he got it right and was unsure of his answers so i play with him and congratulate him when he is right (even though he sometimes thinks mom is wrong still )

Those feature may not be needed for older kids playing, maybe an Easy-Hard setting would make this toy even better! I still think this is the best toy on the market for toddler phonics!

My son received this as a gift when he was not quite two years old. He liked playing around with it right away but was really only able to play with two of the modes - the music and the one that just tells you the letter. Now that he's nearing 3 year old he plays with this literally every day. He'll sit for 15 minutes (or more) at once playing with this. And he's clearly learning his letters and the sounds they make. Now he plays all the games on it and is learning about how to make his name out of letters. He enjoys it and it has been a great learning tool for him.

I like it because on the lower volume (which, lucky for me my son will leave it at) it doesn't annoy me in the slightest. Most noise-making toys annoy me too much.

My almost-2-yr-old has become obsessed with letters. He already knows all of the capitals, and I know he is ready to learn the sounds each letter makes. LeapFrog makes other alphabet toys that sing, ei: "M says mmm, M says mmm, every letter makes a sound and M says mmm." The song is simple and catchy, but the toys have a lot of loose parts and I worried about some getting lost. (I'm referring to LeapFrog Letter Factory Phonics and LeapFrog Fridge Phonics). I was hoping this toy would have the same song, but it does not. It says, "M makes the sound mmm, as in Monster". Which just isn't what I wanted. It is still a great toy. The words and sounds are spoken clearly, and it would be great for kids who have not learned their letters yet. My son learned letters from a similar toy that only tells you the letters and then quizzes you to find letters (this toy has those settings as well). I just wanted to put this review out there for anyone hoping that it has the song that I was hoping for.
