Top Customer Reviews
I've had the LeapPad 2 Power (with rechargeable batteries) for a couple of years. With the games we've purchased, there was still 1.7 GB of free space left on the device. With these games on the LeapPad 3, we have only 352 MB left. On the LeapPad 3 with nothing installed, you start with only 1.6 GB of space so we started with less free space than what we had on the LeapPad 2 with all the games installed. I did not expect the full 4 GB to be available for games as the OS consumes a chunk of that. However, leaving only 1.6 GB for games, over 1 GB less than what is available on the LeapPad 2 is a significant loss of functionality which in my opinion is not overcome by the enhancements.
I was motivated to write this review because none of the comparison grids LeapFrog provides mentions this significant loss of space and in my mind it is incredibly deceitful. They claim it is a trade-off for the "benefit" of a wi-fi enabled device, but I think they have their target audience confused with 13 year old boys. Why they decided to add this useless resource hog without expanding the memory slot is beyond me.
To be fair, I should point out there are options to buy cartridges instead of the downloadable apps. However, I've found that with 2 young boys, the cartridges get lost and the boys fight over them. I much prefer the downloadable apps that can be installed on both devices (one of the many reasons I loved the LeapPad 2). The software you install on your computer to manage the apps allows you to delete and reinstall apps on teh LeapPad and it remembers which ones you've purchased. This means you could temporarily delete an app to make room for a new game and then reinstall it again later after you temporarily delete something else. Technically, you could work around it this way (rotating the games on the LeapPad 3), but what a pain that would be!
With the 10 included apps and LeapSearch capabilities, there is more on board content available to your child with the LeapPad3 vs. the LeapPad2 tablets. While they both have the same amount of on-board memory, the LeapPad3 system does require more memory for the extra apps, peer-to-peer technology capabilities, WiFi connection and enhanced parent controls, including the ability to uninstall and reinstall apps via WiFi (instead of Connecting to the LeapFrog Connect software via USB).
LeapPad3 also offers LeapSearch which takes little ones through a kid-safe web content experience with access to over 1,000 kid-appropriate pieces of content, including videos, images, free games and web pages.
We are always happy to pass your feedback and suggestions along as well.
Thanks for reaching out to us about your experience!
The only thing I don't like is that one of the games it comes with, Pet Pad Party, doesn't let you get any new toys for the pet, even though the game says that you can. It also has wifi abilities with a kid protected internet access so they can look up short videos about animals, cooking, sports, etc. We got it when they first came out, and it still works great! It's very tough and durable. If you like my review, could you please mark it as helpful? Thanks!
My kids aren't really keen on using a stylus, which is why they abandoned the LeapPad2s we bought them. While the LeapPad3 has a stylus, it isn't necessary to use it. This turned out to be a very good thing because the youngest child immediately tore off the soft end, rendering it useless.
The downloadable games and books are very expensive, as they have been with previous versions of the LeapPad. You'll be lucky to find any under ten dollars. Those coming from an iPad and looking for something a little more indestructible are going to find themselves in for a shock after the plethora of free games on other tablets.
The thing that I just could not get behind is the ability to connect to the internet, but not allowing me to set it up to play videos from Netflix or Amazon Prime. This is a no go for me. I pay for the services and just can't see having a dedicated children's tablet that cannot utilize them.
LeapPads were great years ago when they were one of the only kids tablet-like items on the market. Now with Amazon coming out with a Kindle Fire Kids for only fifty dollars more, I can't imagine why a parent would want to spend so much on a product that limits the many child-friendly apps and videos out there and locks you into a marketplace that grossly overcharges for new content.
