Rosetta Stone Hindi level 1-3 TotalE meets expectations thus far. It came with backup software and headset. There are listening, speaking, reading and writing portions, as well as games and a chat feature.
You are immersed in Hindi. You see and hear Hindi, and choose the matching pictures. Nothing is written in English or any other language. None of the words are written in the Roman alphabet. I thought that would make it more difficult and that I wouldn't like it, but the opposite is actually true. Often seeing the difference in Hindi script helps me pick out the subtle differences in sounds that I may not have caught on to otherwise.
One issue: there have been 2 times when it has said my pronunciation was correct when in fact I hadn't said anything, I just bumped the microphone. That makes me wonder how well it is checking my speech when I do speak to it.
I do wish Rosetta Stone would have a companion workbook available for purchase. Instead I find myself taking notes (in English and in Hindi script) since I learn best when writing things down.

Hindi is my first language learning experience with Rosetta Stone. I am really only familiar with the roman alphabet of the English language, so I was a bit lost thrown into Devanagri script without formal introduction to the symbols that form the sounds. I could probably learn a European romance language, such as Spanish, with Rosetta stone, but I had to start using other primary sources for learning Hindi and Rosetta stone has become more of a backup. The "formula" in Rosetta Stone (my daughter had RS Chinese) seems to be decent if you want to learn many languages and you once familiar with RS you can jump into their format; but I only want to learn one. And knowing how to recognize the language pattern for statements like "The boy is not swimming" in very early lessons while still not knowing how to say "What is your name?" or "I would like some water" or some other useful conversation seems, at best, out of sequence. For the money, I would not buy Rosetta Stone again for a language with an unfamiliar alphabet.

For Hindi, the software does not work well at all. One section asks the learner to pronounce and determines whether the pronunciation is sufficiently accurate. It rated my pronunciation accurate when I coughed. Second, the writing section, which should be easier for the program to rate, was even worse. When I wrote things correctly, it rated the spelling wrong even when it spelled the words the same way. This was particularly bad for English words written in Hindi script -- tremendously annoying. For its price, the software should be much better. I rated the product "okay" because it does teach. However, one cannot use this product as the only method of learning the language. I highly recommend Usha Jain's books if you are interested in learning Hindi.

I liked Rosetta Stone Hindi as an accompaniment to a textbook when I started using it.

However, in Unit 5, the software quit handling the Devanagiri script correctly. It no longer uses conjunct characters at all, and it does not correctly place characters that should be above and below other characters. This is essentially the same as misspelling, and renders the words unreadable.

In the photo I have attached, you can see many mistakes. The word विद्यार्थी is particularly ridiculous.

I contacted customer support. After many stock replies, it seemed that they understood the problem and I thought I was communicating to someone who was going to try to fix it. However, I have received only an email telling me that my ticket was closed, and no fix.

You have only three months of access to the Language Training, Live Tutoring, Games and activities, then these features expire and you must pay for a subscription, which the description for this product doesn't tell you. Unlike the CD-ROM sold by Rosetta, this product is not a "learn at your own pace." The features exist, but in reality you must pay for them to ensure continued access.

I want to point out before I write this review that before I started using this version of Rosetta Stone, I had used the previous version (for Hindi also) and I wanted to see the changes that were made to version three. Since I already knew a good amount of Hindi before starting Rosetta stone, I'm not sure how accurate my review will be for someone who knows nothing of the language. Also this review is for V3.
I've always loved to learn languages, the first one I started with was Hindi and it has always been my favorite. I started learning it when I was around fifteen and I'm twenty three now and currently studying it along with Arabic in college. I first started it with Rosetta stone's version two and I really liked it so when version three came out, I really wanted to see how the improvements are. Generally, I really like Rosetta Stone and I don't think I would have been able to get as far in Hindi as I have without it, however it does have some major flaws just like any other language program. It won't make you fluent, but I honestly don't believe any one program will, it will give you a good foundation for the language. One thing I love about this program is the fact there are no translations, it throws the language at you and you have to guess what the phrase means. I really like learning without translations constantly but if you don't like this type of method, then don't use Rosetta Stone. Another aspect I like about it is that it is excellent for listening and speaking. It will help your pronunciation a lot, even if the speech recognition isn't always perfect. The vocabulary in this program is also very good, it's true that it isn't things you would use in daily conversations, but the vocabulary taught is often things you will have to learn eventually.
