User experience - the interface is easy to use and works fine on Mac OSX (Mountain Lion). Navigation from workout to workout is as easy as the click of a button. You can repeat the workouts as many times as you need until you feel comfortable.
Flashcards - great for practice to get your pronunciation down and familiarity with the four tones of Mandarin.
The only negative I have about this product is that you can't adjust the size of the video on the computer. However, there is a web version for Mandarin which is easier to view to a larger display area. I found this helps when viewing the tonal marks.
Tech Support - I haven't needed much help, but the time I had to use them they were great.
All in all a great product.
It teaches me the way an adult learns. Discovery learning is great, but inefficient. Combine active engagement and a good teacher, and students make a lot more practice than by passive absorption or discovery learning. The combination of an instructor, practice, and quizzes is great. By simply explaining how the rule works, I am saved a lot of time that other programs would spend forcing the learner to figure the rules out. The practice, the quizzes, and the oral exercises allow the student to practice and apply the rules, at least within the limitations of this kind of program.
Overall, the pacing was a little slow for me, but I was also able to move through lessons more quickly because I'm not in a lock-step classroom. The only real faults I've seen in the way that this program works are, firstly, that only Pinyin is taught (characters should be introduced at some point...maybe when they come up with parts 4 and 5???), and, secondly, the tones should have been explained earlier in the program. That would train my ear in what to listen for.
My only serious fault is that the software has huge issues with OS X Lion. Fluenz has been awesome in working with me to solve the problem, but they have not actually solved it yet. Fortunately, I have an 8-year old iMac that was on its way out of my life, but at least it runs the program. I really wish I could run it on my brand new MacBook Air. My hope is that Fluenz will soon solve this problem.
The learning system itself combines many forms of learning. You have the opportunity to listen, speak using a microphone to check your response, match Mandarin to English words, and other vocabulary "quizzes". My only real criticism is about the microphone system. It is not very accurate, but I didn't expect it to be based on my experience with other similar microphone type learning systems. I find the practice exercises that require you type in answers to be very helpful because you need to type in the tones as well. The vocabulary of Mandarin is quite easy since there are no verb conjugations you need to worry about. The tones are the difficult part. Needing to type the tone matching the word helps remember the appropriate tone for the appropriate word.
Overall, from my experience based on the response from native speakers, is this learning system is easy and effective. Very recommended
