SOME THINGS TO KNOW
Before purchasing Vietnamese TOTALe, there are a few things you might like to know:
* Vietnamese TOTALe teaches in the Northern accent
* Vietnamese TOTALe only goes up to level 3 (other languages may go up to level 5)
* TOTALe may only be installed on one computer
* Up to five learners may be added (those learners may use Rosetta Course freely but must pay for access to Rosetta World and Studio)
* 6 month guarantee only available if purchased directly from Rosetta Stone (must be CD-ROM version)
* Children under thirteen may not access Rosetta World and Studio.
I actually found the flash cards to be much more difficult in Vietnamese than in French. Of course, Vietnamese is a more difficult language for a Westerner to learn. They don't start out with simple words -- it's partial sentences.
Basically, words flash on the screen and the learners match them with the cards. Later, we type them or we say them. Word association comes slowly but surely. My kids picked up rather quickly.
The word recognition is weaker in Vietnamses than in French. I could say things completely wrong and Vietnamese TOTALe takes it. There is an option to set the sensitivity. I just haven't gotten around to it. The default gives lots of leeway.
On the software, there are a lot fewer speakers in Vietnamese than in French.Read more ›
I've read plenty of complaints about this software not teaching you the southern accent but I don't think it's a big issue. You can definitely pick up the nuances from your friends if you aim to speak in a certain accent and use different words. I consider the differences as accents rather than dialects because after traveling across America, Americans have different words and pronunciation for English words...but we don't call those dialects!
Obviously, you want to supplement learning from this software package with speaking to real Vietnamese people. That really sticks the words into your head. As well, while using Rosetta Stone you should pay attention to reading and learning the alphabets of the Vietnamese language if you ever plan to visit Vietnam -- it definitely helps being a little independent when knowing which bus to get onto and what food a cafe is offering. I have communicated with vendors and strangers without a help from anyone in the north, central, and southern part of Vietnam after using Rosetta Stone, and my pronunciation seems to be pretty good for getting simple things done.
Using this software:
- When speaking into the microphone, wait for at least one second before you speak (an underline will appear when this occurs). If you just speak immediately after a phrase is spoken, the software will cut off the 1st second of the recording.Read more ›
One of my biggest problem is that during pronunciation lesson the program is giving bad scores even the pronunciation according to my Vietnamese friend is perfectly right. I always waiting to start repeating the sentence after the bip tone and still the program does not or wrongly recognize my words or sentence. Another down point on the program I see, sometimes it is difficult to understand the meaning of the pictures and no explanation or guidance in any language.
All over the program is not bad but for the amount of money Rosetta ask for I would expect not to have problems with the voice recognition and also a bit more explanation.
You learn the meanings and ideas of the language itself by trial and error, not how to translate to your own language. Given enough time and practice you will obviously know both without needing to translate between them as is common in other language learning processes, but it can be frustrating.
