This is our second year using the Learning Through Language Arts curriculum. We really enjoy the short lessons, that keep the kids from getting burnt out. A quick inspection of the curriculum would lead you to believe that the material is not covered thoroughly enough. However if you work the book from beginning to end you will find that although the lessons are brief the content comes up again and again to help reinforce all the material all year long. I am giveing it four stars however because I hate that you have to purchase the reading books separate I could understand if they were books of classic literature but they are not the are weakly written stories that the publisher greatly over charges for...

Excellent follow up to Ruth Beechick's "The Three R's" and "Language and Thinking for Young Children"

Learning Language Arts through Literature is based on the educational philosophy of Dr. Ruth Beechick and her natural learning method as outlined in her books, "The Three R'," "Language and Thinking for Young Children," and "You Can Teach Your Child Successfully." The curriculum is authored by the late Debbie Strayer, a homeschooling mother, teacher, author and public speaker, and Susan S. Simpson, a teacher, author and publisher.
Learning Language Arts through Literature Red Book is a comprehensive language arts curriculum which teaches phonics, spelling, reading, grammar, composition, research and study skills, and higher order thinking skills, creative expression/games, and penmanship. The author has chosen "real books" which are the back bone for the curriculum's lessons. "Real Book" selections include: "A Tree is Nice," "Little Bear," "The Fire Cat," "Bravest Dog Ever," "Ox-Cart Ma," "Corduroy," "The Little Island," "Billy and Blaze," "Harry the Dirty Dog," and "Abraham Lincoln." Literature passages from "real books" are utilized for copy work and dictation. Learning Language Arts through Literature incorporates word wheels, flip books, cut and paste activities and games into the daily lesson plans. The Red Book contains six readers, "In, Out and About Catfish Pond," Up, Down and Around the Rain Tree," "Forest Fables," "Underwater Friends," "All Around the Farm," and Famous People," illustrated by acclaimed artist, Jack Stockman. The student workbook is consumable.
The instructors guide is comprised of easy to use lesson plans spanning a period of 36 weeks. Each lesson is made up of the following components: New Skills Taught, Materials Needed, Scripted Lesson Plan, Higher Order Thinking Skills, Answers, Examples, Diagrams and References to the student activity book. Assessments allow the teacher to evaluate the student's progress. Phonics Facts, Grammar Guides, Syllable Sense and Punctuation Pointers provide reinforcement as the student learns the mechanics of reading, grammar and spelling. Placement tests are available online at the Common Sense Press website.
As a homeschooler, I have perused several language arts curriculums. I cannot praise this curriculum enough! Learning Language Arts Through Literature receives an A+ from this homeschooling parent!

We love LLATL. Each lesson is broken into sub-categories, so the kids aren't bored doing the same thing over and over again. It uses passages from great literature. My kids are usually so intrigued by the passages, it makes them want to go and read the book! Yeah for reading!! I would highly recommend this book. I also like how it goes back and covers things that have already been taught. It reinforces what has been taught so the children are actually learning it.

Great concept: using bits of good literature to informally learn English skills--but too much jumping around. Each lesson has a little of this & a little of that. A lot of useless exercises, esp towards the end of each lesson. The readers are very boring. Also, the comp. questions were totally unnecessary, asking such obvious questions. The little cut & paste activities were pointless. We crossed out a lot of the book. I was very disappointed, since this curriculum has such a huge following.

This curriculum requires that the parent/teacher instruct the student at every single step as the child's workbook often times does not even include all the instructions to complete a task. As a homeschooling mom of 3, there has to be some level of independent learning. I purchased the additional readers BUT there are additional books required that are not mentioned until you are starting the lesson. This requires you to drop everything and go to the library (with fingers crossed the book is carried and available) or just skipping that part of the lesson. I wanted an all in one language arts curriculum and this curriculum offers that, but it is too cumbersome when homeschooling more than one child.

I love the curriculum but it requires 6 separate readers to accompany it. Several library books are also used and are much easier to use. I enjoy how multiple areas of language arts are incorporated in this series. Writing, reading, phonics, sentence structure and parts of speech. Definitely recommend buying the readers with the Red Book.
