Thank you for contacting Learning Resources/Educational Insights. We take safety very seriously and all of our products meet or exceed safety standards with our high standards for toy safety. All products are phthalate-free, lead-free and are made of PVC and low density polyethylene. Our products do not contain BPA or any toxins.
Our toys are evaluated against the standards set forth by the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). They come in a cardboard box with a plastic handle that is meant to be used as a storage and carrying box. The box measures 15 1/2 inches wide x almost 14 inches high x almost 4 inches deep. When full the box weighs just over 3 lbs. A brochure is included that provides some facts about each dinosaur as well as some clever, educational discussion starters. I'm reminded of the many quality toys I looked at not too long ago in the Smithsonian store in DC.
Visually they are most impressive and fairly detailed, including different texturing on each. The coloring is nice with good shading. They are heavy but not completely solid, as there are places on a few that can be depressed by squeezing. However, it would certainly hurt to have one of these thrown at you, especially if you're a small child. As any molded plastic toy must, they have seams but these do not detract from their appearance. They stand well, without being at all wobbly, on both carpeted and uncarpeted surfaces. If placed in a line with the nose of one above the tail of the one in front of it the line is about 4 feet long; if you wanted to place them side by side facing forward on a shelf with a bit of space between each you could do it with 2 feet of shelving (you could do it in 1 foot of space if they are literally crammed up against each other); about 3 feet would be required to have them lined up in semi-profile. (Taking these measurements gave me an excuse to play with them. ;-)
They can be cleaned with a damp cloth but are not dishwasher safe and should not be immersed in water.
If you search jumbo dinosaurs learning resources, then look for images, you should easily find a photo of a little boy surrounded by these figures, which will give you a good sense of their size (the same photo is on the back of the box they come in). You can find the same photo at the Learning Resources site; type jumbo dinosaurs into the search box, then click on MORE VIEWS on the relevant page.
Con: the offgassing is really, really bad. If you're giving these to a small child as a gift, you might want to open up the box and let them offgas outside for a day or two before repackaging and giving. Seriously, these things smell BAD.
Another problem is that the Amazon item listing says that they're made of dishwasher-safe plastic, which is why, in spite of the offgassing mentioned in some of the reviews, we went ahead and bought this set for our preschooler: we thought we would just run them through a cycle or two before giving. Unfortunately, the product insert has this to say: "To prevent water from trapping inside the dinosaurs, do not immerse them in water. Pieces are not dishwasher safe." And indeed, there's a little hole in the tails that will suck up water if you wash them to try to get rid of some of the weird plastic smell. So I'm not sure what you're supposed to do about the offgassing problem, except maybe leave them in the sun for a couple of days.
Overall, I think this toy would be an okay buy if not for the offgassing+not diswasher-safe problem. As is, I feel like I overpaid. I'm hoping the offgassing will slow down in a couple of days, but we'll see.
Edited to add: the offgassing did indeed slow significantly after a week. To help it along, I scrubbed the dinosaurs in hot water and soap by hand, then left to air-dry. After about a week, I was comfortable letting our child play with them. They have become a favorite toy, and get used pretty hard, and seem to be holding up well. I still feel unsure about recommending this product to others, since the initial offgassing is really pretty awful. So I'm sticking with two stars, and I wouldn't give this to a child who's young enough to still put things in its mouth a lot.
Second edit: I'm upping the number of stars to three (from an initial two stars) because we've had these dinosaurs for over a year, and they continue to be frequently played with (and none too gently), and they are still in excellent shape. The initial off-gassing IS really bad, and I would not give these to a kid who's young enough that they still mouth their toys because of it. But for a kid of 3+ or so (or a younger child who is good about not licking toys!) I think these are a good dinosaur option. The dinos are heavy and sturdy, not cheap-feeling or lightweight. The quality in general is good, there's no fading or chipping of paint or pieces breaking off or anything like that. If it weren't for the off-gassing, I'd give these an even higher rating.
I just feel ambivalent about them because of how they smell right out of the box - and, to be frank, because these are manufactured in China, so that I don't have a lot of confidence that the off-gassing is something totally innocuous. So I'll end with what I tell other parents in real life about this set: "They are awesome, and I recommend them with one hefty reservation: wash them and let them air-dry for a week or so before you give them to your kid, because they give off freaky fumes at first. And don't give them to a baby."
