the pieces are not chokable (too small) which is especially nice if you have a toddler and a baby; the pieces are very realistic; my daughter received a set of these breakfast, lunch, & dinner foods in baskets for her 2nd b-day & plays with them daily; we separate the foods by color into the different baskets, she pretends to make breakfast, lunch, & dinner in *her* kitchen & feeds her "babies" while my husband & I get meals ready in *our* kitchen, etc. - a great gift/toy for young toddlers that will probably last a long time as the way she (& her younger sister) play with them over the years (think: pretend supermarket, pretend restaurant, etc.); when babies/kids put the pieces in their mouths it's easy to put them all through the dishwasher or hand-wash them to sanitize them

We have had this set for years now, having been played with three children over the space of 7 years. The food items are of a realistic size. The lettuce really looks like lettuce and the cheese is so real, I have accidentally scolded my kids for leaving cheese on the floor. :)

As the other reviewer said, be sure to sanitize - I use cleaning wipes rather than soak them in water since some items (like the "milk" in a cup) have a small hole where water could get trapped inside.

I would gladly buy this again, it's a really durable and fun set. My kids still enjoy playing with it. Thank goodness for toys like this that don't need batteries!!

This basket contains a slice of bologna, 2 buns (top and bottom), cheese slice, 4 chips, hamburger patty, ice cream cone, lettuce, glass of milk, tomato slice, 2 slices of white bread, and a watermelon wedge.

The bologna, cheese, and lettuce are all rubbery, so they have realistic feel. In general, this food looks really realistic. I love the ice cream cone! The milk in the glass doesn't come out. Great play food.

By the way, I contacted Learning Resources about the safety of their plastic and this is their response.
"We take safety very seriously and all of our products meet or exceed safety standards. I am writing to assure you that all our product meets Learning Resources high standards for toy safety. They do NOT contain phthalates or lead and are made of PVC and low density polyethylene. They do not contain BPA and is made with PVC plastics.
We take safety very for all of our children's products and toys are evaluated against the standards set forth by the Consumer Products Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This includes testing for certain phthalates (a plasticizer used to make plastic soft), lead in paint, lead in substrate and compliance with the testing guidelines set forth by ASTM F-963."

As a mom and someone who has worked with preschoolers.. it is worth the extra money to buy high quality to play food. This food offers a variety of items and will help your child pretend play. The food looks real and is very well made. It isn't easily squished. It can be cleaned. I love this food!

Always my favorite type of gifts to give - pretend food! Yes, kids like things that have sounds and music, but they also love playing with items they are familiar with, and they see food every day. They can pretend they're at the supermarket, in their kitchen, or hosting a party with their stuffed animals or friends. So realistic!

I purchased this for my preschooler and toodler. When I received these I amazed by how real these looked and felt. My kids have spend hours playing and loving this set. I will not buy any other pretend/ play food than from Learning Resources. The quality and realism is top.

Bought this set for my two-year-old twins that received a kitchen set for Christmas. They LOVE it. They were able to identify with each item immediately. I really love that the foods are close to life-size, but a great size for little hands. A bit pricey, but good quality.

We bought both sets, from Learning Resources and Melissa and Doug's play food, and Learning Resources is by far superior. They are much more "life-like," there is a lot more detail, and are larger pieces. The Melissa and Doug version is much smaller, and bulky. Plus the velcro patches that are meant to connect the pieces together take away from the "realism" of the food. They do help to keep the pieces together when the kids make sandwiches or burgers, but the velcro is needed because the M&D play food is so bulky.

The only complaint I have about the Learning Resources play food is that the set we bought (the sandwich and burger in a blue shopping basket) is that the "milk" slips out of the "glass." We will be Super-Gluing the "milk" to the glass soon.

Overall, very happy with the play food, and our two year old son loves making us lunch!
