I read from the reviews that the set didn't contain the materials for the experiments, so I went to the company's website to look up the project cards and put together a box of those supplies to give along with the set. I bought white vinegar, salt, baking soda, food coloring, vegetable oil, cotton balls, and a big baggie of dirty pennies, this cost about $8
I highly recommend this set, it's great if you want to guide the experiments and use together and it's great for hours of imaginary play.
The bulk of what you are getting here is just plastic containers. Besides simple plastic containers, you're only getting a pair of safety goggles, and eyedropper, a tiny funnel, a pair of plastic tweezers, and a magnifying glass - none of which (besides the magnifying glass) are particularly necessary for these experiments. And I won't even count the "experiment cards" as an inclusion, as you could find these "experiments" - and many, many more - in any number of kid's science books or online.
So really, you could do most of these experiments with some simple plastic containers you found at home (or at a thrift store for a dollar or two), and a quick web search of "kid's experiments." Which is what I suggest you do.
On the other hand, if you have a budding scientist in the family and really want to get them an "official" science kit, this isn't a bad set.
I must say, this was an excellent find and I wish I had a set like this growing up!
(I also purchased the color food sorting baskets of theirs, which is another really great-quality product)
Update: The Erlenmyer flask finally threw in the towel this past weekend, a year after my review, three years after gifting the set. The bottom came loose and now it can't hold liquid, which was a fun surprise event. I am still completely pleased with this set - I can't blame it for a single piece finally biting the dust - this flask has seen very HEAVY usage. When we "do science," we do it daily for weeks on end. If I could purchase the Erlenmeyer flask by itself, I would. It will really be missed.
