During a recent trip to the Boston Children's Museum, my 5-year-old discovered a set of these in the science area; my husband quite literally had to pick him up and carry him away at closing time. Surprisingly, these suckers are not easy to find - literally the only retailer, online or off, is Amazon. I even called my mom - a veteran kindergarten teacher - and her only other suggestion was a teacher supply store. So I ordered these, figuring I could give the extra sets away if it proved too much.
As it turns out, each "set" only contains 12 blocks (O-Z), for a total of 72 pentominoes - perfect for sharing with a friend or two, or for siblings, or even for one kid who really loves pentominoes! Each set of 12 is a different color - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple - which would be great for use in classrooms. Unlike the photo (which is a tad deceiving by way of volume), these come in a smaller, round container. Each set is individually wrapped by color, although we just unwrapped them all and stuck everything back in the container. They're plastic, but pretty sturdy, and I think they'd withstand typical grade-school-age (ab)use. Best of all, they're quiet, they're fun, they're easy to clean up and my son loves to play with them!
