This book was way over rated and over priced because it did not deliver. Most of what is found in the book is free on the web and in many cases you can find out more detail online. There were a few cases where the subject was well covered but that was more the exception than the rule. Many topics are just left hanging so beginners trying to learn Foundation will still be left in the dark. I really hate to give such a bad review but the fact is at $40 this is a real rip off. It is a $19.95 book at best.

Mismatch between the book's code examples and the downloaded code or Codio versions was confusing and frustrating. Because of that it wasn't possible to easily follow along with the book's project file. Overall this is a good overview or survey of Foundation 5's features and functionality but the best resource for learning this material is the Zurb Foundation documentation.

Haven't finished it yet, but so far I would describe it as a focused, tight, very practical introduction to Zurb Foundation. It is clearly aimed at getting you up and running with the least hassle and in the shortest possible time.
I will have more to say when I finish the book and have had time to use the information in my own programming.

This is a brand new book just published in August 2014 covering the Foundation 5 framework. I've just started reading it, and I'm finding it very easy to follow and clear. There are lots of small code examples which are not at all difficult to follow. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is new with the Foundation framework. If you're an advanced Foundation user, this book will probably be mostly review, but if you know CSS, HTML and some JavaScript and want to learn Foundation, this book is excellent.

Zurb Foundation is a framework that offers many capabilities for any website, and this book manages to illustrate the ins and outs of most of them. The book is structured well, and each example includes the code, and a description of what the result should look like. Unfortunately, for many of the early chapters there are no diagrams or screenshots of what the results should look like. The introductory chapters may actually be the chapters where readers run into issues, as opposed to the last chapters, and so it seems a little remiss.
The language in the book is easy to follow, while remaining formal enough to sound professional. The examples given, as well as the premise of the book (prototyping via Foundation) are both applicable, and useful. The second half of the book is dedicated to creating a prototype, as well as focusing on what’s required to run foundation in your project. Some of the chapters on configuring your project folder seemed a little brief for those unfamiliar with the tools being used, but overall conveyed all important information. This is hardly a fault, as the book is focused more on using Zurb Foundation than installing it (which is covered fairly well on their website as well).
To sum up: The book is a well-written example of how to use Zurb Foundation to create a prototype, while offering some further information into the features available, as well as how to configure and test your website. While it could use a few more visual examples in the introductory chapters, it is otherwise a good resource for developers interested in using Foundation to prototype websites.

Despite the introductory title you need to know quite a bit of stuff in order to appreciate the book. If talking about CSS grids, differences between an `em' and a `rem' and Sass mixins all sound like unintelligible mumbo-jumbo I strongly recommend you to read some detailed texts on those subjects before approaching this book. "Learning Zurb Foundation" won't teach you how to become a web developer, but will teach an (even moderately) experienced one how to become faster and better at his job by leveraging a wonderful framework and community that only Zurb can offer.
Right from the beginning we catch a glimpse of the author's general work-flow.
The first few chapters, in fact, talk about how in-browser prototyping often proves to be much better than Photoshop comps that might be hard to realize in practice. It also has the positive side benefit to let you know immediately whether your sketches are going to work in, ehrm, troublesome browsers like IE 8. The author also goes on pointing readers to a template contract for those freelancers who are not using one already (is spite of what Mike Monteiro taught us).
Next is an introduction to Foundation's grid system followed by a huge laundry list of what the framework has to offer and how to use it with plenty of example code to look at.
Last chapters introduce readers to what an amazing combo Foundation and Sass can be, and how you can use the latter to easily and quickly customize the former to suit your needs. The author barely scratches the surface of what's possible to do but he shows how easy it is to come up with a prototype in few hours.
I also appreciated how, in the very last chapter, the author tells readers to leave Photoshop prototypes behind in favor of doing in-browser prototyping. He also stressed how important it is for designers to communicate frequently with the rest of the team, especially developers. In my experience it helps designers stay with their feet on the ground and avoid "impossible" designs that have to be thrown away because they are unfamiliar with the medium (I found fonts and assets licensing to be definitely a pain point).
There are some omissions here and there such as not mentioning the most widely used Sass mixin library (Compass), or the fact that Interchange will be replaced by the picture HMTL5 element which is slated to be implemented in all major browser between the end of 2014 and the beginning of 2015.
The book is short but dense with information and experienced developers will find it an easy read. Content covered by chapters on Foundation's grid and components can admittedly be found on Zurb's website and feel a little redundant in today's age of ubiquitous Internet connections and search engines, but when combined with other chapters you get a nice text which serves adequately as an introduction to Zurb Foundation.

This is amazing book that provides detailed introduction to foundation framework. My experience with foundation started exactly an year back with Foundation 4 and with internet information I could build a site for a client. but it needed bit of research etc. Now that there exists a book with details and also with latest version information, it is really handy for developers who want to develop responsive applications.

Halfway through the book. Decent book if you need to learn about Zurb Foundation.
Very annoyed that a couple of weeks after I paid £17.50 for this it now retails at £10.50
