Tiny and tough, the Leatherman® Squirt® S4 multi-tool is ready to take on even the biggest challenge. It features three screwdrivers, a knife blade, spring-action scissors and so much more...
The Squirt folds down to a tight, easy-to-transport 2-1/4 inches.
When it comes to convenience, it's tough to beat the Squirt S4. This multitool is ultra-compact, super tough, and it weighs just two ounces -- making it the perfect tool to pop into that backpack or slip into those slacks. And for such a tiny unit, the Squirt really packs a lot of tough, functional tools for any occasion. Take it on the road, stuff it into a pocket, throw it in the glove compartment, or take it camping. This little tool is ready to work or play.
Most of the tools are accessible from the outside for ease of operation, and the anodized aluminum handles offer rugged yet lightweight protection for decades of use. Micro-serrations help the scissors grip and cut even fine materials, and other features -- tweezers, knife, screwdrivers and more -- are all available without opening the tool. And at a mere 2-1/4 inches, this zippy little number does a great job of staying out of the way until you need it. A handy lanyard attachment hooks easily to a loop on your backpack or key ring.
Key User Features
The central feature of the Squirt, the scissors, is accessed by rotating the handles open in a quick, easy butterfly maneuver, and the blades can be lifted out of the handle using the nail nicks. Just rotate the blades out until they're fully extended. The Squirt's blades are 100-percent high-grade stainless steel, and it can be cleaned, dried, and re-oiled periodically -- which is recommended, especially after it's used in a damp environment.
The Squirt S4 also includes a 1-1/2-inch ruler. This is located on the back side of the nail file/cleaner, and it uses the tip of the blade as the zero point.
Small enough to stash anywhere, the Squirt has a pair of integrated removable tweezers.

The Leatherman Tool Group and its History of Quality
In 1975, Leatherman Tool Group founder Tim Leatherman was inspired by leaky pipes and a cranky car on a budget trip to Europe -- and thus the idea for his first pocket survival tool was conceived. Since then, Leatherman has become an internationally recognized company with hundreds of employees and a wide variety of durable, versatile, stylish products. Created with bold designs and truly rugged construction, Leatherman products are a perfect addition for tool kits, emergency sets, and glove compartments everywhere.

It is comparable to the Leatherman Micra, the Gerber Shortcut and the Victorinox Classic .
Overall, the Squirt S4 is significantly smaller than the Shortcut. It's certainly more comfortable in the pocket, but the Gerber seems more rugged. This could be a plus or minus depending on your needs.
The scissors is small but very functional. Small is relative, though. It's larger and more rugged than the scissors on the Victorinox Classic. It's about the same size as that on the Shortcut. The jaws on the Shortcut open wider, and as a consequence, so do the handles. I can't see it affecting the functionality in any way though.
The main blade is sharp. I used it sharpen a few pencils and it retained the edge. Again, the blade on the Squirt S4 is smaller than that on the Gerber Shortcut. You could see it as "elegant" versus "bulky" or "dainty" versus "rugged" depending on your needs :D. The same thing for the nailfile.
The tweezers on the Squirt are removable versus the Shortcut which rotates out. The edge goes to the Leatherman here as it's easier to use a free tweezers especially on small items. I say this even though I've lost several tweezers from my Victorinox Classic knives.
The large flathead screwdrivers are comparable. Like all the other tools, the Gerber flathead is slightly larger, but not significantly so. It's strong enough to drive some screws into a block of pine.
The small flathead works perfectly to tighten eyeglass screws. This is nice, as most tools are too large for the tiny eyeglass screws.
As long as it's understood that this is a keychain tool, the Squirt S4 should meet expectations. In my opinion it's a but overpriced at $25 but it is handy and decently put together, even if not the most rugged tool.
The only complaint I have is that the bottle opener is poor. It's really tough to grip under the cap with it. If this is all you have, you'll get the cap off, but it is a shame that such a great little tool is spoiled by a design flaw that should be so easy to spot and fix. Leatherman quality is typically excellent, but I wish they'd improve the bottle opener on this little guy.
That being said, this is an excellent and cool-looking little tool that comes in handy all the time.
UPDATE May 6, 2010: I loved my Squirt so much that I bought one for my girlfriend for Christmas 2008, and she uses it all the time. More recently, I decided to get one for my mom for Mother's Day. I thought it would be useful to keep in her purse, especially since it weighs next-to-nothing. HOWEVER, I was really disappointed with the drop in quality with the most recent Squirt compared with the older two. The knife blade was a bit rough, and rubs against the side of the casing when you close it (a little careful bending fixed this problem), and the scissors didn't snap closed as well as the earlier two models I had. This newest Squirt is a little lighter than the older ones and is clearly of lesser quality. The springs holding the tools open felt a significantly weaker. I'm a little disappointed, and have brought my review down from 4 stars to 3. It's still a useful little tool, but I hope Leatherman doesn't start to skimp on the quality of the rest of their tools.
