The Most Popular Leatherman Ever
The Leatherman Wave multi-tool is hands down our most popular model, made famous by its outside-accessible blades that can be deployed with just one hand. When we redesigned it in 2004, we gave the new Wave larger knives, stronger pliers, longer wire cutters, and all-locking blades. Perfect for any job, adventure, or everyday task, the Wave multi-tool is an international best-seller.
The Wave features tools that are accessible while the tool is in its folded or closed position, mimicking the functionality of a pocket knife. It also offers all locking features which means that every tool and knife on the body of the handle, with the exception of the plier head, will lock into place. In addition, every feature on the Wave can be opened and operated with one hand.
Out here in Oregon, we're used to getting things done - you could call it our pioneering spirit. It's just how we do things. It's the reason Tim Leatherman built his first multi-purpose tool, and why Leatherman Tool Group has made a promise to our community to stay local. Why? Well, we're proud to support U.S. workers who are dedicated to the quality craftsmanship that goes into each of our original American multi-tools, just like our founder.
Enhanced for Strength
The Leatherman Wave features enhanced geometry and beefed-up hardware where the handles attach to the jaws so the handles will withstand even extreme loads. The elliptical pliers hub design withstands more than double the squeezing load (133%, to be exact) of the previous version.
Enhanced for Strength
Improved Blade Design
Customizable Bit Drivers

2. The mole sheath is got so much Velcro on it that it takes a lot to open it so one hand is almost not an option. Also the sheath is too deep so it's very hard to get the tool out with one hand. I bought a Leatherman leather sheath.
The rest of my review I'm going to compare with the only other multi tool that I have which is the Gerber suspension:
Keep in mind the Gerber suspension I got for $29 and the Leatherman Wave was $99
Definitely keeping both!!!
The Gerber suspension looks a lot nicer but slightly seems to be less in weight.
Each Implement on the Gerber suspension seems to be a little bit heavier Duty.
Now the good for the Leatherman Wave:
1. There's two files that the Leatherman has that the Gerber doesn't have (a wood file and a diamond file).
2. The Gerber doesn't have an eye glass screwdriver (small screwdriver).
So far you would say wow the Gerber is probably better but here are the big differences: in the Leatherman versus the Garber and where the Leatherman really shines and it's a huge huge thing:
1. The knife is way longer
2. The serrated knife is way longer
3. The saw is way longer
4. The scissors away longer
5. The pliers open much wider and are longer in length as well!!!
What these differences add up to is much, much more function when you need the tool so they look nice on the Garber but when you actually have to use them to saw something to cut something you've got the edge with the Leatherman Wave; they function better as a tool because of the length if you have to cut a board, a longer saw is better and so on for each longer tool!!
So to summarize the quality in the Gerber might be better but when you have to actually use the tool I prefer the functionality of the Leatherman!
So actually doing the job the Leatherman is better!
If the Gerber had the tool length in all the different implements I would prefer the Gerber ....so I will use the Leatherman as my daily go-to tool!
I've read negative comments on the finish. It is true that the black finish does come off on your hands at first, leaving your hands looking like you just worked on your car engine. However, Leatherman states that their intention on this finish is for non-reflective military purposes, not EDC. If this is an issue for you, I would recommend the silver stainless version. After many paper towels and some WD-40, the black finish is still coming off and setting into the tool. Still, I think the black oxide finish looks great which is why I chose it. I'm sure it would be a lot more difficult to find it after dropping it in the woods than with the silver version. Just a couple thoughts to consider.
As far as the tool itself goes, there are hundreds of five-star reviews you can read. This is one heck of a multi tool for the job site, outdoor use, and for every day needs. My favorite features are the instantly accessible main blades on the outside of the tool, all of which use a liner lock
First off, the black finish gets ALL over your hands the first 5-6 uses. No big deal - I figured it would take some breaking in.
The worst part about this Leatherman is that I literally can't use it unless I have another multitool or knife type object. One side of the tool is IMPOSSIBLE to open up without using another object. I can't access the flathead, scissors, or small screwdriver because they WILL NOT OPEN unless I use a knife or other screwdriver. I've tried breaking the thing in, oiling, etc - and they will not budge. The last thing is that I though these were spring assisted, they're not and it's a pain in the buns not being able to use the pliers with one hand.
