I recently lost my E4 and purchased this as a replacement. I was dubious about it, as the small screwdriver was a very frequently used component for me (as an automation engineer, my usual MO after stripping a wire is to attach it to a screw terminal of some sort) and the scissors don't seem to have much purpose given that the stripper blades already have a cutting section in addition to the knife blade, but the E4 is now out of production and the new finish looked nice at least. I also noticed in the image on this product description that unlike my old E4, the ES4 was held together by allen screws instead of rivets, so I hoped I'd be able to adapt it to my needs with relative ease. Now that I've received it, it seems that Leatherman has gone back to a riveted construction, and the tiny, redundant scissors are there to stay. I've also found that the new, more durable finish is rubbing off in my pocket after two days in my pocket with keys. The overall build quality still seems good and I'm not aware of any other keychain-sized tool with wire strippers so I'll continue carrying it, but I wish the old E4 were still available at a decent price.

UPDATE: In the course of moving out of my old house I just discovered my long-lost E4, no worse for wear, in a gap behind some furniture where it had fallen. I've posted a picture in the product images showing the two tools side by side and detailing the things about the ES4 that make it a worse tool in my opinion. My complaint about the product image is no longer valid, the current images all accurately reflect the riveted construction of the tool I received.

I own numerous Leatherman multitools including the Mini, Pulse, PST, Juice S2, Juice SC2, Wave, Skeletool, Skeletool CX, Micra, Squirt P4, and Squirt S4. I also own numerous Victorinox Swiss Army Knives and multitools. I truly respect and admire the stellar designs utilized by both companies. Having used and owned all these different tools, I feel that the Leatherman Squirt ES4 and PS4 are now unparalleled as the best keychain size multi tools fit for everyday carry (EDC).

1. Small size, shorter than the Micra, although thicker
2. Lightweight, lighter than the Micra
3. Pliers, which Victorinox does not offer in any of their 58 mm size Swiss Army Knives (SAK)
4. In the ES4 model there are wire strippers (20, 18, 16, 14, 12 gauges)
5. Scissors
6. Flat screwdriver, medium size
7. Flat Philips driver
8. File, with fine and coarse sides
9. Knife, with clip point blade
10. Keyring
11. Bottle opener
12. All tools are accessible with the pliers closed
13. Aesthetically pleasing design with compact body

1. Colored handles, which I do not expect to hold up well on a keychain. The Micra has the best design in this instance with its steel handles
2. No toothpick, which is not important to me, but I always hear how people seem to want this in a SAK
3. No tweezers, which I do miss a little as they can be useful for removing splinters
4. No small sized flat screwdriver, which was on the Micra
5. Scissors are much smaller than the Squirt S4 but on par with the Victorinox 58 mm SAKs

The Leatherman Squirt PS4 and ES4 offer an amazing set of tools which include pliers and scissors in the same model, unlike the older S4 (scissors) or P4 (pliers) models or the Micra in which the presence of one excluded the other. If Leatherman ever makes the ES4 or PS4 with plain steel or aluminum handles, I feel that they would be close to perfect.

I was a huge fan of the E4, and when I saw this new version I decided to pick it up as an impulse purchase. Unfortunately, I didn't look closely enough to realize that they crippled the tool for some users. Most of the people I know that purchased this tool to use regularly, work in electronics. Not on AC wiring as commercial or residential electrician, but as electrical technicians in the scientific and industrial fields. The thing that made the E4 an amazing tool was that the wire strippers combined with the small flatblade made it incredibly handy to have on hand when troubleshooting electronics and electrical enclosures. As I saw another commenter mention, the E4 was so handy because you could use it to strip a wire and then attach it to a terminal strip, which are found on most any piece of industrial or scientific electronic equipment. The terminals in question use 1/8" drivers, and typically are recessed slightly for safety purposes. That means to be effective, you need a flatblade with a width of 1/8" or less, and a length of at least .25" maintaining that width.

On the ES4, they eliminated the long narrow flatblade, and replaced it with the combo phillips blade, which is worthless for working on standard terminals because the quick widening of the blade makes it impossible to reach them. I loved my E4, because if I was troubleshooting, I could easily change/disconnect wires, or add new ones as needed without having to go back and get my tools. Now, the tool went from incredibly useful to just another pair of wire strippers, which I have little use for.

I understand that not everyone will have this problem, so for those people this may be a great tool. That said, the other review isn't the first person I've heard complain about the lack of the long slim flatblade...
