It's been 7 years since 2004's "Hit Squad" so I was thinking maybe Nick Saloman had retired The Bevis Frond. Well surprise, we finally get a new studio album and it's an excellent one! Continuing the trend from "Hit Squad" the emphasis here is on the songs (18 of them clocking in at almost 77 minutes). The lyics tend to the personal and inspirational with lots of chiming and ringing guitars that sounds like Bevis meets the Byrds. Only 2 songs come in at over 6 minutes (both my favorites here) with extended guitar work. Of these "Too Kind" at 8 and 1/2 minutes is the one magnum opus you expect to get on each Frond album. The poignant lyrics are about an artist's struggle to capture, please and hold an audience. Killer! Nobody else is making music like this now. Please Nick, next time don't stay away for so long!

One of the best kept secrets in the annals Rock comes back with another stellar group of songs, nary a clunker here, and brevity seems to be the order of the day here, no long-winded guitar freakout, just nicely strummed folk, rock and even some powe pop/punk.
Expanding to a four piece has left Mr. Soloman to concentrate aon wirting melodies and he delivers, if you liked Hit Squad you'll love this. Just a great set of music, keep em coming Nic.
'nough said.

Good going guys. Without much fanfare the only album of the year that everyone MUST hear is released! I hate history lessons, leave that to writers. I just want to say that if you do not purchase this cd you will turn into a robot, and you won't even know it. Long Live Nick Salmon and Bevis Frond!

Led by accomplished British songwriter & guitarist extraordinaire Nick Saloman, The Bevis
Frond's 20th? album combines a knack for rolling, energetic melodies with exceptional
psychedelic guitar work, and the occasional flare-up of folk influence. The songs are
comfortable & fun, infused with a British sense of humor and life insight--smooth, yearning
psychedelic rock melodies that tend to sneak up on you with a subtle brilliance. Something like
a combination of Elvis Costello/Nick Lowe/the Kinks/Jethro Tull, with Jimi Hendrix sitting in on
guitar. Also features Adrian Shaw of Hawkwind fame on bass. NOTE: Any Bevis Frond album is worth your time, but if the psychedelic guitar playing is your thing, be sure to check out one of their first 3 releases, "Miasma", "Triptych" or "Inner Marshland". All of these will blow your mind with Saloman's natural ability to unleash Hendrix-like trippy riffs.

It's sad that more Americans are unfamiliar with Nick Saloman's The Bevis Frond. This new recording is full of Nick's typically epic, memorable, anthemic, hard-driving, psychedelic, insightful and often entirely depressing music. There's an abundance of top-notch songs in this set, and few if any dogs.

We cannot see the future.
Is this some form of blindness?
I'd trade in my possessions
For just one word of kindness.

The one area I'm less than impressed by is technical: the mix, particularly of the drums. While the drums are mixed mostly in the direct center (which is itself a bit rudimentary), the two tom-toms are panned hard left and hard right in the mix! It's utterly bizarre and distracting. As a drummer I want the mix to reflect the positions of the drums and this is simply impossible. It's a nit, but it's a problem.
