Leaving War, Finding Love: A Veteran's Transition Paperback – July 4, 2017

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 9 ratings

Throughout generations, soldiers have gone to war and returned home changed men. Within the journey from man to warrior, an identity, brotherhood, and purpose is formed. As these veterans transition out of service, they are asked to shed that past and chart unknown territory. What happens when war returns home for the final time? How do marriages survive the new battlefield? How can wives offer understanding and support?

Leaving War, Finding Love illustrates the season of marriage post-military and the common difficulties associated with the civilian transition. It signifies the difference between PTSD and what the author has identified as Military Separation Anxiety, and how the latter affects marriages. Its unique message speaks directly to the wife who transitions alongside her service member, addressing both her supportive role as well as their new civilian relationship. With 48% of all post-9/11 veterans stating they have experienced strains in family relations after leaving the military, Leaving War, Finding Love is both timely and imperative to help every American Hero and their family transition successfully.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book is beautifully written and the popular, conversational style of the author makes it accessible to a very wide audience. Hillary Sigrist writes with the confidence of someone who can only speak from inside experience and her voice comes across as authoritative and cogent, utterly compelling."--Christian Sia for Readers' Favorite

Leaving War, Finding Love is an unflinching portrait of the challenges our country’s warriors and their spouses face as they make the difficult transition from the stark realities of the battlefield to a life at peace. This is not an easy path to walk, and as Hilllary Sigrist walks it and tells the story with a frank and loving grace, she is clearing the way for those who must follow their own way back. It is not an easy journey but one each couple must navigate on their own. Thankfully, they have this woman’s brave story to help them find their way.

Hillary has brilliantly articulated both a personal and professional understanding of one of life's most challenging transitions. And most importantly, she puts it into a context that will help loved ones empathize and support their warrior through this transition. I highly recommend this book as a tool for anyone in support of warriors they care about as they transition from the chaotic fog of war that is understood to the more chaotic fog of society that goes by different rules. I am the wife of retired SOF Navy and a former Special Operations Task Force Surgeon.

This wonderful book offers the military spouse incredible insight, beautifully covering the emotional side of all that leaving the military means to both the active duty member and the spouse. I truly wish I had had a copy of this book back when we retired! It would have been so helpful. I encourage current active duty families who will retire within the next year or two and recently separated/retired families to pick this up so your transition out will hopefully be smoother than ours was.
