It is difficult to convey the scope of this cookbook: there are over 500 recipes, including many variations on a theme (half a dozen varieties of hummus, for example.) It's easy to be overwhelmed, so I recommend starting with a few of the basics. Last week I cooked Hummus (38), Baba Ganoush (46), Fattoush (40), Walnut and Cayenne Dip (49), and Pickled Turnips (484). Every recipe was a gem: full of bright, healthy flavors, simple to prepare and -- best of all -- tasting exactly the way it does in good Middle Eastern restaurants.
There is a fair amount of prep work, since you're working with such fresh produce, but most things can be chopped and blended in bulk ahead of time: I did that and after one afternoon of cooking, I ate delicious leftovers all week. The flavors really develop after a few days in the refrigerator, and the food is even better. I'm already planning a birthday party for my mom next week, including those 5 and a few others (Falafel, Fried Cauliflower, Tabbouli, Semolina & Almond Cake. Hungry yet?)
Someday I hope to be able to try every recipe in this book! I know it's ambitious, but God willing, I have many years to work toward that goal. :)
Phaidon Press should really re-print this wonderful collection of recipes to fix the errors in this book.

When I first received this book that put me off a little and it went on the shelf for a little while. I'm not such a big lamb eater myself, not hating it, mind, just - ALL the time?! But then summer came, and it was HOT, so what better place to look for recipe ideas than a mediterranean cookbook? So I did and I'm glad of it, too, as I discovered many very good recipes, especially for lamb! No, I'm kidding, for veg, actually. My favourite recipe in this book is a dish where tomato halves are baked in pepper halves and then filled with a lime-spked rice. I stuck faithfully to the recipe (not knowing what it was meant to taste like I didn't do my usual "Let's take this as a suggestion") and ended up with a really tasty dish that I have taken into my regular summer cuisine.
I also tried other recipes and always ended up with good food on the table. So.... what more could you ask for?
Delicious recipes for fans of middle eastern food or for people who want inspiration and introductions to new techniques and ingredients. Lots of these recipes are very easy and come out tasting brilliant. Make lots of small dishes, get some friends over and show off a wonderful mezze-style meal to them.
