This book: Lebor na hUidre or The Book of the Dun Cow is different than advertised.
It is advertised as being published in 1992, and thus modern. In fact it is merely a reprint of an earlier edition begun in 1921 and finished in 1929. The bibliographic references all seem to stop about 1921.
It is also advertised as being in English and Irish. This is true, but this implies to the unwary that there is an English translation of the Irish text, which is not the case. The Text is entirely Irish. The Introduction is basically in English. The two are totally different. The Introduction (pp.ix-xliv) discusses the history of the manuscript along with a history of the scribes who created the manuscript and the parts they played in the various sections. The edition is based upon a lithographed recension created in 1870.
In short, this is neither a diplomatic version of the various texts nor a translation of the various texts. Instead its one virtue was to translate into standard type the handscribed lithographic version of 1870 and make it more widely available for those who read Irish.
