The purpose of the Cambridge Edition is to offer translations of the best modern German edition of Kant's work in a uniform format suitable for Kant scholars. When complete (fourteen volumes are currently envisaged) the edition will include all of Kant's published writings and a generous selection from the unpublished writings such as the Opus postumum, handschriftliche Nachlass, lectures, and correspondence. This volume contains the first translation into English of notes from Kant's lectures on metaphysics. These lectures, dating from the 1760s to the 1790s, touch on all the major topics and phases of Kant's philosophy. Most of these notes have appeared only recently in the German Academy Edition; this translation offers many corrections of that edition. As is standard with the volumes in the Cambridge Edition there is an extensive editorial apparatus, including extensive linguistic and explanatory notes, a detailed subject index, and glossaries of key terms.

Was Kant a mystic?

What I found to be most interesting in this series of lectures is where Kant writes about the “transmigration of the human soul,” that is, the existence of the soul before and after the birth and death of the human body. This theory of reincarnation has been the standard teaching of Hinduism as well as in Plato through the voice of Socrates! I didn’t know that Kant had these same ideas. This is good news for those of us who look at philosophy as more than just “logical analysis” and describing the universe as merely material.

Finally, A Kant Book That Kan

How long have the myriad metaphysiphiles in global academe waited for an astute, detailed, precisely annotated, intensely careful translation from the original German of Kant's very own brilliant lectures? This book is, to any serious Kant scholar or meta-groupie, as my collegues and I only mildly jocularly refer to ourselves as well as other devotees of Kant's metaphysics, the land of milk and honey, well seasoned by a plethora of footnote gracefully placed upon footnote. Losing ones "Self" in the densely layered forest of meaning and annotations is a philosopher's uberdream.
Neitzche was a fool! Kant lives on!
