My son who is autistic has started recently collecting vinyl ever since last year decided now is the time to collect Led Zeppelin records

He listened to the Led Zep 1 on Spotify and he was ever so impressed but I told him it would sound much better in the record format

Anyway for christmas with the money he received from his grandparents and close friends he decided to order it and it came today and he has been blown away by it ever since

He told me and I quote "I've never heard rock been played like that before. The drummer clearly was a badass and the guitarist is something else. The lead vocalist really impressed me and you know its a led zep song because of that distinctive voice.

Brought a tear to my eye when he said that

Sound quality of its age, let down by seriously distorted high frequencies e.g. cymbals

This is a recording of its time and no matter how much remastering is done it shows its age. The guitars, vocals and drums are on the whole very good. The recording is let down by the distortion and shear noise of the cymbals, otherwise this would be a 4 star recording.

I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.

• Clarity – some loss of clarity particularly in the upper registers. Not muddy but sounds slightly fuzzy. Cymbals are just a buzz
• Channel separation - good
• Channel balance – very good, conventional left, right and centre
• Sound Stage – good, but very good when music is simple i.e. few instruments. Instruments can be clearly placed but looses definition as complexity increases
• Distortion – some on upper registers, cymbals in particular are just noise
• Compression – good dynamic range does not sound as if compressed
• Atmosphere – good but comes alive on simpler more acoustic tracks. Not a warm intimate recording but aggressive “in your face.”
• Bass – low frequencies – drums and bass guitar are very good, well defined and audible
• Treble – high frequencies – electric and acoustic guitars are excellent. The cymbals are however terrible and after continued listening become a distraction. The organ is very distinct
• Vocals – very good clear and defined

As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.

Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

A few notes about the Laser Media Led Zeppelin box set

It is almost certain that none of the recordings in this box are sourced from radio broadcasts.
Some reviews have been published complaining about poor audio quality. In truth, only the first disc has any real audio drawbacks - unless you're a hypersensitive hi-fi fanatic, of course. Most are - I assume - soundboard recordings.
DIsc 1 has been identified as Orlando, Florida, 31-08-1971, and is problematic for collectors. (It's previously been released above-ground as part of a Classic Broadcasts CD). It's divided between soundboard and airy-sounding audience-tape. Both have mid-song edits and other glitches. And obviously this isn't the whole show (reconstructions are out there if you know where to look).
But, for all that, it may be the best disc in this package - certainly most consistently great performance. Plant's voice is in good form and Page is in one of his purple patches - Heartbreaker is the first, easy to underrate, highlight; Dazed gets the best out of relatively few modules. And there are two LZ3 tunes which won't last in the repertoire.
Disc 6 has been identified as a severe edit of the Frankfurt 1980 tape. As always on the last LZ tour the two frontmen are "inconsistent", but toward the end of the disc we get a top-tier triple-bill of All My Love/Trampled Underfoot/Since...
On Discs 2 and 3 the producers managed to compress the 12th February 1975 show in New York down to two CDs, by the usual method of cutting out all the between-song business. Plant's voice is a little road-roughened. The highlights are what you would expect - No Quarter and Dazed, though neither is as long as it would later become. Odd moment - the mangled That's Alright Mama in the middle of Heartbreaker.
Discs 4 and 5 are a similarly-trimmed 1977 show which I haven't been able to identify (it's not the New York one that's been legitimized before). The audio quality is so good you could mistake this for an actual radio show, but there are some issues - mid-song edits, the worst being a painful edit during No Quarter which removes the entire solo-piano part. Odd moment - a You Shook Me quote at the end of In My Time Of Dying.
So, this is a cheap, easy but not ideal way to scratch your live Led Zep itch. More complete versions of these shows exist, but...you know the rest. I guess if it whets some novices' appetites for those epic dramatic 1975/1977 LZ shows, and if Disc 6 send them back Through The Out Door with renewed interest, then that's reason enough for it to exist.

For some reason I never really got into Led Zep when I was listening to LP's a lot in my teens. Over the years I have enjoyed their songs and owned some greatest hits but never listened to the original works.

I decided to get some of the highly rated records for my 50th to go with a new turntable and I have to say I am just blown away.

This record is incredible. As a fan of folk , blues and rock it just has everything. From the opening rock of Good times, bad times though blues like You Shook Me and folky blues like Black Mountain Side (which reminded me a lot of Bert Jansch. I have since learn both come from a common traditional source.. very different takes on it).

Overall just fantastic.
