Our Unique Technology
We developed a distinctive operating system (OS) called BOLOS, which we integrate either to a secure chip for the Ledger wallet line, or to a Hardware Security Module (HSM) for various enterprise solutions. So far, Ledger has been the only player in the market to provide this technology.
Ledger Nano S
Cryptocurrency hardware wallet
Ledger Nano S is a Bitcoin, Ethereum and Altcoins hardware wallet, based on robust safety features for storing cryptographic assets and securing digital payments. It connects to any computer (USB) and embeds a secure OLED display to double-check and confirm each transaction with a single tap on its side buttons.
When you own cryptocurrencies, you need to protect your confidential data and the access to your funds. With Ledger Nano S, secrets like private keys are never exposed: sensitive operations are isolated inside your hardware wallet within a state-of-the-art Secure Element, locked by a PIN code. Transactions can’t get tampered with, they are physically verified on the embedded screen with a simple press of a button.
Ledger Nano S is based on a dual chip architecture (ST31/STM32, Certification level: CC EAL5+). The firmware integrity is guaranteed by cryptographic attestation.
Ledger Nano S ensures only you can access your accounts by requiring a 4 digit PIN code each time it is plugged to your computer.
Your private keys are never held or known by Ledger or a third party: they are hard locked in the Secure Element. With Ledger Nano S, your wallet remains decentralized, you are your own bank.
Initialization or restoration of your configuration is fully done on the secure environment of the Ledger Nano S. Your cryptographic secrets are never exposed to the outside world.

My Ledger Nano S arrived today in a shrink wrapped box (as expected). Upon opening the box I discovered stains on the metal indicating that someone had handled it sometime after manufacturing. See the attached photo so you can see what I'm describing.
I feel compelled to write this review because the sole purpose of a hard wallet is to securely store crypto currency.
Very pleased with Ledger. They do listen to their customers. The new firmware 1.2 features add some of the features missing in my previous review. The addition of Litecoin is welcoming, as well as the new Ledger Manager. Token and contract support for Ethereum, and some other small additions. I would like to see Monero or Dash support in the near future but already Ledger is paving the way for a hardware wallet to have and has been the first to include multi-crypto support on a single device. Great job Ledger! Keep it up.
I am a normal every day Jo, so my review of this item is my own opinion. I apologize for any grammar errors. It is a quick review and I am just winging it. The build and quality of the Nano S is nice. The screen is welcoming but very limited as far as in formations goes. The metal cover that swing open is a bit annoying as there is no way to lock it in place. It is pretty loose on there and you can bend it to have a stiffer movement, but over time it just loosens up again.
The bitcoin side of the Nano S UI is super easy to use. Your typical information is displayed. However unlike the Trezor there is no way to tag descriptions on transactions.
The ethereum side of the Nano S UI is very limited. Not very much information is displayed, very basic. Your are limited to one address only, a disappointment for sure.
At the time of this review both apps requires a desktop/laptop to use. No mobile apps as of yet. If you want to know your balance, the only way is to connect it to the chrome app. Disappointing because it has a display and no setting to show your balance. Even the box it came in show the Ledger with a balance on the picture?
The 4 digit PIN require is ok, but I prefer how Trezor does it with random pins. I think Ledger scrambled PIN could be set up like the Trezor in the near future.
The FIDO security works really well for my drop box and gmail. If your going to use both nano S and the Trezor, I recommend setting up the nano S first then the Trezor. For some reason I does not work the other way round.
Have said all that it does what it suppose to do. Hopefully future updates will address limitations mentioned. Currently I use the Ledger for my ETH holding and my Trezor for my BTC. Since I use my Trezor more often with bitcoin this works for my setup. Later on I throw the Nano S into a Secured Safe. It is decent and I do recommend it.
