Ex-presidential candidate Pat Robertson briefly outsold Michael Crichton with his apocalypse novel The End of the Age (now available on audiocassette), and the similar The Third Millennium sells well, but the Left Behind series is the absolute champion in the race to make the Book of Revelation into racy thriller reading. --Tim Appelo

The Left Behind series has been such a phenomenon and elicited so many reviews from fans and critics alike that just about every positive or negative angle has been previously explored. Let me just say that I was so influenced by the poor reviews of this series and its authors' theology that I balked at even giving it a chance. Plus, "Left Behind" itself is merely the first installment of a very lengthy series, and my reading experience has been that most epic novels or series are usually plodding, padded, and boring. Fortunately, I finally took the plunge despite all that and am I glad I did! "Left Behind's" plot--what if God were to suddently take up all the world's believers to spare them the coming end times tribulation leading up to the climactic battle of Armageddon--is inherently fascinating, and one the authors' play out with unflagging drama. However, it is the characters which pull the reader along as we experience this awesome story through their personal tragedies and triumphs. This human side to the story is rendered with great care and believability. The reactions from media and intelluctual elite to what has happened to all the world's Christians are handled far more accurately than some would like to admit, as is the interaction between the several protagonists as they struggle to come to grips with being "left behind" and what they must face up to now. Contrary to some negative reviews, the writing is quite good. It may not be Shakespeare, but Jerry Jenkins's prose is fluid, easily digested, and keeps you turning the pages. I also find the dialogue quite realistic, and in fact it accurately recreates the conversations many Evangelical Christians routinely find themselves in. On purely theological grounds, even if one is not necessarily in agreement with Tim Lahaye concerning the interpretation of Last Things and the book of Revelation, "Left Behind" nonetheless gives you a lot to think about and is a great faith-booster to any denomination of Christian reader. Even Christians from groups which do not believe in the Rapture (as modern Evangelicals use the term) certainly believe in a Second Coming of our Lord, and "Left Behind" is simply one possible literary interpretation of how that might develop. As for non-Christians, I should hope they will still be able to enjoy the story and that it will make them carefully consider how valuable their soul really is. As to Mr. Lahaye's motivation for creating this series, I am no mind reader and will not take a guess at an ulterior motive when there is as yet no proof of that. Certainly, he has created a series which has helped many strengthen their faith and given great encouragement to those struggling day-to-day to live Godly lives, and indeed has given some readers their first glimpse of the eternal Gospel. Overall, the good certainly seems to outweigh the bad, at least in this first book of the series. By the end of the book I was hooked and ready to start the next installment ("Tribulation Force") ASAP, the first series book to have that effect on me in a long while. I certainly recommend "Left Behind" and hope any reader will find it as entertaining and inspirational as I did.

Ver másThe real question you have to ask is what your motivation for reading this novel is. I don't know if a nonbeliever would get a lot out of this book. I've read some reviews that say that it is a good story for believers and nonbelievers but I am not sure I agree. For me this novel has a great story, characters and most of all a great message but then again I am a believer in power and love of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are confused with your faith I would also think that this novel would be a great tool for you. However, now that I think of it if you are a nonbeliever, I say pick it up and read it as the best thing that can happen is this novel gives you something to think about.
As I read this novel I found it easy to relate to several of the main characters, as they are all at a different point in their developing relationship with God. As I look back on my path to salvation I can remember thinking almost the same as several of the characters. Whether it is, "well I am not that bad, at least I am not a murderer" or "I am a good person doesn't that count for something?" These are the questions that flow through the characters Buck and Captain Steele and they must decide where they are with their faith and where they need to be.
Captain Steele has lost his wife and one of his children as they vanished just like Millions of others it the event known as the Rapture. Now he must turn his attention to his daughter, Chloe who like him was "Left Behind". At the same time Cameron Williams also known as Buck is a journalist who has his own questions to answer but what fears him the most is a man from Romania who is quickly taken over the United Nations is indeed the Antichrist.
This story is fun and terrifying all at the same time. I strongly recommend this novel for all believers of Christ. I will say one other thing if you are "on the fence" about this subject then I strongly recommend this novel as I believe it will take you to the right side of things.
As for my question in the title, is the end near? Honestly, I have no idea. All I know is it seems like anytime I turn on the news there is usually an act of unspeakable horror in the headline. The world is becoming scarier by the day and I for one think that we are slowly terminating ourselves and we need to believe in the power of God now more than ever.
Grade: A

I am not used to researching authors before I read them. If I was, I might have realized this was a pretty Christian book. Don't get me wrong, I knew what the subject matter was about before I went into it, so I was expecting a lot of religion. Honestly, though, the religion didn't bother me. Even the constant praying didn't bother me. What bothered me were the characters. The characters seemed like a very devote Christian was writing about sinners, not even sure how sinners acted. There is the really swank Cameron (nicknamed Buck), Raymond: the pilot who was (unsuccessfully) trying to shack up with the deplorable flight attendant (Hattie Durham) and the college student (Chloe). The feel of the characters were completely wrong. Chloe talked like a 12 year old at times, and Buck seemed kind of creepy around her. And all the crying! The people cried over silly things, not the obvious "hey my family is all missing." No, they cry over someones sincerity, or they cry because someone else is crying over a feeling they just had.
The characters could have been a little more genuine. I don't know anyone that really talks the way the characters do. Furthermore, I don't know ANYONE as insufferable as the flight attendant Hattie Durham, or why they go to such great lengths to include her and appease her when she is nothing but a whiny child. She is a downright bitch to most of them, and they STILL try to help her! She is an ass to Raymond when he explains it was wrong to have the attraction to her, because, you know, nothing is wrong with infidelity (at least in Hattie's mind). I can't get over how much I wish someone would have dropped a piano on Hattie's head. In fact, this could have been a 5 star book if the characters hadn't been so tedious. Did I mention I didn't really care for the characters? The only one I did like was Bruce Barnes, and he was rarely in it.
I loved this storyline. The story was good, even if my mind wandered when they started talking politics. I knew there was a bad guy, and there were two other guys they talked about a lot that seemed powerful and maybe bad. That was the extent I got from the politics (again, mind wandered a lot in those parts). The pacing could have been a bit faster but at the end, when we see some of the antichrist flexing his power, I felt the book started to live up to my initial expectations of the story. The real question is could I sit through another 12 books with these characters?
Don't get me wrong. I really did like the book. It was a good read, a great storyline, and a very interesting look at a topic I find completely fascinating. The characters just REALLY bothered me.

However, I am interested in religion, and I thought this series sounded quite interesting after having been told about it by a friend. I was NOT disappointed. I think the story, and the characters, are wonderful. After reading this first book, I am going to buy every book in the series.
The two authors have over 160 published books to their credit, which speaks for itself. Both are eminently qualified to write on religious subjects. La Haye is a minister who has published over 40 non-fiction books, translated into 30 languages. He holds doctorates in both theology and literature, and is a man of many outstanding accomplishments. Jenkins, in addition to working as an editor and publisher, has personally published over 100 books, and in dozens of well-known magazines.
After perusing the other reviews, I think I see why some readers have poorly rated this book. Most of the readers who give poor ratings are not really interested in religion. Therefore, they see the books as an effort to "scare, and convert" them to become born-again Christians. Who knows if the authors feel they may "bring some people to God." Personally, I read the story because I enjoy religious thrillers! I didn't feel like they were trying to convert me. My advice is, if religion and religious subjects turn you off, don't buy this book.
What I enjoyed most about the book is just seeing how ordinary people might react if the prophecies in the Bible suddenly started being fulfilled! I think it's a great story. Personally, I think the characters are well-developed and interesting.
There is another reason that non-religious people might want to consider reading this book-something no one else has mentioned in other reviews. Religious fundamentalism seems to be on the rise worldwide over the past 20 years. It is happening in nearly every country, and nearly every religion-Christian, Muslim, Hindu, etc. As with ANY major trend, it makes sense to know and follow what's going on. I'm an American woman living in Morocco. I have become more interested in, and knowledgeable about, religion since living here, especially since some of the Muslims I know make lots of comments about the Christian religion-one recent example being that George Bush may be the "antichrist!" One interesting thing I read in THIS book is that the antichrist is supposed to come from a EUROPEAN country. Anyway, I plan to share this book with some of my Muslim friends who read English, as well as with other friends-but mainly, just because I really enjoyed the book.
Additionally, for anyone who already knows that they enjoy the Religious Thriller Genre, I HIGHLY recommend another book called, "A Skeleton in God's Closet," by Paul Maher.

Pictures were provided with my answers to questions about the product, so that was critical to my decision to purchase. There are 16 "Left Behind" Audio CD sets in the complete series. Many of these are getting difficult to find in good condition. I loved that this seller had kept this set of 3 CDs for Left Behind (Left Behind #1) Audio CD in excellent condition, and with the slip cover as well. The CDs are narrated by Frank Muller, who was a very very good narrator. But when he died suddenly in 2008 from a motorcycle accident, Jack Sondericker narrated The Remnant #10, then Steve Sever took over for the rest of the audio series. This was the last set I needed to complete my collection of the original audio CD series by these 3 narrators. I like it so much better than the newer versions with drama themes. I was so pleased to get this CD from the seller without any problems at all, and with such excellent service from the seller, Cosmic Closets! They went above and beyond for my order! I read these books many years ago, and wanted to get the original audio version to share with friends at church. Thanks for a refreshing experience with my purchase in the pursuit to find all of these amazing audio CDs about the end times!

Bible is anyway full of interesting plots and Revelation is probably one of the best, so taking it a baseline story was already a great idea. If nothing else, you need to read through it just to get to that end. I did not expect it, or at least, not like that. So thumbs up for an amazing twist at the end!I absolutely loved it!
