Makes Number One look like an idiot

Nearly all of this story is about the woman Star Trek fans know as Number One. Not only would I prefer that at least HALF of a TOS novel be about Kirk and Spock, but the story makes Number One look like an idiot. We're TOLD that she's blindingly competent, but every time we see her in action, she makes stupid decisions and seems kind of bumbling.

The author forces his characters and their technology to behave the way he wants them to, regardless of whether or not this is realistic. So people equipped with tricorders do not scan for local inhabitants and are surprised and captured by them, even when they know that local inhabitants exist. It seems as if "do a scan with your tricorder before getting out of the shuttle" would be a Week 1 lesson at Starfleet Academy, but it's evidently beyond a woman that we're told is gosh, oh, so wonderfully competent. Oh, and it's possible to put multiple bugs -- both cameras and sound -- in the captain's quarters without anyone detecting them, even though a highly important object was stolen from those same quarters earlier in the book, so one would think Kirk or Spock or Scotty -- probably all three -- would be on their guard.

When Kirk and Spock do put in their rare appearances, they aren't always in character. For example, when Kirk tells Spock that his piloting stinks, Spock replies, "If I had feelings, they would be hurt." SPOCK said that? No way! Totally out of character.

The story is not uninteresting, and the tie-in to the technology in "Mirror, Mirror" was intriguing, but if I'm reading a Star Trek novel, I want the characters to be IN character, I want them NOT to behave in weirdly stupid ways, and I want the book to be mostly about Kirk and Spock, not mostly about a minor character from the first pilot.

I've read FAN fiction better than this book. Is it too much to ask that the book be mostly about Kirk and Spock and that they be in character?

Not Reading The Rest of The Books

The writing in this book is simply awful. Beyond that, the author has no idea what the Star Trek universe is. None of the known characters speak or think the way they do in any of the other novels, the TV series or movies. The best example (or the worst example, depending on how you look at it) is Spock. He's not even close to the character we've come to know and love.

The careless of all the characters is overwhelming. No one has a clue? Security is so bad that the Captain's quarters are not only bugged but have cameras?

I'm not reading the rest of the books in this series.

Excellent Novel With Historical Links - Couldn't Put It Down!

Let's face it...there are a lot of Star Trek novels out there, and often times it feels like a dime a dozen. But this one is one of the good ones. "Captain to Captain" in the Legacies Book 1 series is a novel which brings back a previously lesser known but important character, Number One from the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage" and the "The Menagerie". It tells a story which delves through history and invokes a prior Enterprise captain, Robert April and his crew. Like other novels which exploit different time periods, this one shifts between the present and past, but it does it in a coherent way which is essential to the story. It has a great underlying story with plot twists and turns, a lot of excitement, and some really interesting aliens. There is also a very interesting underlying theme which links to something else in the original Star Trek canon. And the ending is very surprising and sets up the story for the next novel to come.

All in all, this is a very entertaining, easily-read novel which fits well within the Star Trek universe. It is well worth the effort and will make you look forward to the next novel.....I am looking forward to it myself!

This is a very well-written, well-conceived story. I have only two quibbles that keep it from being given a fifth star: 1) after concluding the main plot points for the current story satisfactorily, it adds a scene that leaves things hanging, ruining the feeling of completeness that we were ALMOST allowed to feel, and 2) the actions of Captain Una, aka Number One from the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage", seem somewhat out of character. Granted, the first quibble is simply a matter of my preference for stories that are NOT continued, "same bat time, same bat channel", and the second is simply a subjective matter of my take on her character based on a very limited amount of information.

First book of the 50th anniversary trilogy. Well written, if a bit predictable. Enjoyed having Robert April making a long overdue return to the literary form. We could use some more April stories in the future. Since the first captain of the Enterprise doesn't get much time as Pike and Kirk.
Other than that a enjoyable novel.

This story, like so many others provided some continuity of some the characters we met during the series. There has always been a curiosity as to whatever happened to Number 1 from the episode, "The Cage!" It's nice to have a clear back story of her. I will say also I knew of Captain Robert April, but knew nothing about him. From what I've read I wouldn't mind reading some more of his Star Trek adventures through the Universe.

I’m a HUGE Start Trek TOS fan and I really tried to like this book. However, there wasn’t enough of the Kirk, Spock, Bones dynamic which I love so much. I became frustrated with the decisions Number One made, time and again. I even found myself yelling (in my mind) “WTF, she got captured again?! She did WHAT? She’s a Star Fleet officer, a Captain of a ship of the line, and she acted that way?” Sorry, I just couldn’t believe her actions were justified, well thought out, or even rational to Number One. I was planning to buy the rest of the audiobooks in this series, but now I won’t bother.

Kirk and the gang were done well and in character. Robert April as the father figure for his crew and standing for the Federation's morals was also a high point of the book. I liked that the aliens came across as very strange and menacing instead of just another race to meet. Plot twist in the last few pages a nice surprise.

A Secret the spans the decades and holding that secret from a galaxy unprepared for the power it represents are the Captains and First Officers of the Starship Enterprise. Captain April while commanding the ship now famed in legend visits the world of Usilde and observes an alien presence that is corrupting this primitive world and it's people. Lt. Una (aka Number One) a fresh faced officer leads an away mission to gather intel and it goes terribly wrong. Captain April intervenes before the whole landing party is lost but there seems to be no room for negotiation with this alien species who are intent on subjugating the native population and terraforming the world and they seem to have the power to back up their intent. We get a potential tricky Prime Directive dilemma as Uslide is not a Federation world and the alien invaders are unknown, the choice to oppose this wanton destruction or negotiate an understanding is why some people get to don the shirt and sit at the heart of a Starship but as we see logic and reasoning can often conflict with a heart and souls desire to do anything to oppose an injustice or right a wrong.
Legacies: Book 1: Captain to Captain is the first part of a trilogy of novels each written by a different author, in this novel Greg lays the groundwork and background to the events that helped to shape Una into the character of Number One we saw on the original tv pilot. The character has been used in other novels but this trilogy could become the baseline for judging this character who we never really got to know. Greg also make full use of work by Diane Carey who described April's Enterprise in some detail, it was most satisfying to recognise many names amongst this crew. The elements of the story that centered on a much older Captain Una (commander of Yorktown) also paid off handsomely as her interaction with Spock and the mystery of her visit to Kirk's Enterprise has you on the edge, you know something is going on but at the point you are not sure what. In many ways you get lost in the events on Usilde such is the wonderful descriptive world and people Greg presents but switching back to Kirk and company makes you realise the two main aspects of the novel are feeding off each other and offering up an excellent opening to this trilogy.

I will post exactly the same advice for the 2 other books of this trilogy. The scenario was very well thought and the depth of the story, the pleasure to go along this very long and breath taking story across the 3 books and leaving with our favorite characters Kirk, Spock, McCoy and all the crew, and also some returning character from the very first episode of the legendary serie, makes this opus a fantastic tribute to the 50th Anniversary. A great pleasure to read, a difficulty not to read it in one treat!
