After listening to a few other recordings of the original Stokowski soundtrack I find that that original is faulty. There's this BIG bash somewhere along the way which is in all of them so it had to have been someone banging into something which was caught on the original recording, also a lot of coughing and paper rattling which is now very distracting in these remastered, enhanced CD formats. That goes for too for the 2 discs in this collection which is the remastered original soundtrack, again, with all the ambient & distracting noises. HOWEVER, the other 2 discs are Kostal's re-recording--in what I would think was a better studio with musicians aware of the highly sensitive pick-ups involved in the newer recording equipment. The music on these two Kostal CDs are clean and clear, same excerpts as the movie but just in a more listenable recording.

Fantasia is now a 75+ year-old film. Despite its age, the music and the film is a classic for all ages.

This version of Fantasia is part of "The Legacy Collection" from Disney, an album series for eleven distinct Disney films. The Lion King is the first title to be released from this collection. This is a mini hardcover CD booklet, which features original artwork and illustrations by Walt Disney Animation Studios visual development artist, Lorelay Bové.

This four CD collection includes the original Leopold Stokowski recordings, the Irwin Kostal 1982 re-recordings, and some bonus tracks. If you've watched the film and enjoyed it, you will love having this in your music collection. Also included is an mp3 version of this album stored on Amazon Music, which is linked to your account.

The technical quality of the original recording sounds dated, but that is to be expected from 75+ year-old audio. The music will forever be classic and you can now listen and enjoy it anywhere, anytime. Recommended.

I ordered The Legendary Collection: FANTASIA before its release. I've been a big fan of the original Fantasia. It's one of the first films I bought on VHS for my two sons. The collection is very comprehensive. Four CDs with all the music from the film as well as the original scores and a three bonus tracks, Clair De Lune, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Peter And The Wolf, the last two read by Sterling Holloway. Disney used Sterling Holloway in numerous animated films, probably the most memorable being Winnie The Pooh. It's hard to tell if the music has been remastered. It seems to lack volume. The booklet includes a lot of concept drawing and animated scenes from Fantasia. But they are small. Which brings me to my only disappointment with this release – the format. The booklet is the size of a CD, not very good for reading to your children or grand children. A larger format would have allowed for larger images, larger text and a more enjoyable experience of reading the book while listening to the music. As a result everything feels crammed into this little book. I really think Disney fell short on this. This is the sixth release (I think) of a Disney Classic animated film soundtrack. I'm assuming the others were in the same format; I don't own any of those. I guess I just expected a little more. But the music will always be timeless.
I would give it 3.5 of 5 stars but Amazon doesn't allow that.

Disney thought it was HUGE to re-record the Fantasia score in clean digital sound. But no one could replace Stokowski, even if the sound was 1,000% better, so they re-re-released Fantasia with a restored version of the Stokowski score. This set has both so that you can compare. And make no mistake, the Stokowski version still has flaws that could not be restored out. But take the scars as those in fine leather and enjoy anyway.

I've been looking for a copy of Disney's version of "Peter and the Wolf" (non-vinyl) for 20+ year, I should give five stars with it's inclusion here for that reason alone but for a four-CD set, two of the CDs are basically just copies. I more refined ear may be able to tell the difference in the different orchestras but I certainly can't. The packaging is nice though, certainly better than the norm. All of the music brings back memories though so for $20 it was a no-brainer.

It has both the Stokowski version of Fantasia and the 80s re-recording, plus a bunch of vinyl extra tracks like "Peter and the Wolf" and "Sorcerer's Apprentice" narrated by Sterling Holloway. I don't listen to the bonus tracks much, but being able to compare Toccata and Fugue side-by-side is fantastic. Generally I prefer the original recordings, but why choose if you don't have to?

The Art of animation in "FANTASIA" was ahead of it's time with this FantaSound Stereo concert set to gorgeous illustrations captivated many an eye. it was only during a re-release in the '70's with a neon colorized poster that Fantasia caught on as a cult movie and every hippie and pot head flocked to see the psychedelic colors swirling around the screen! Today it is like looking and listening to a Picasso work of art!

Although this is like the fourth time I have bought this soundtrack it is always wonderful to get new tracks and better versions then the other CD releases. I hope they continue these releases. With the 10 or so that are out now they have really went deep to find some new stuff. The packaging is beautiful and the liner note are filled with behind the scenes information as well as lyrics. A great buy and well worth the price.

I've got a few of Disney's Legacy Collection editions of their film scores, and being a classical music nerd as well as a Disney nerd, this one is perhaps my favourite of the ones I've got. For those who already have a copy of the "Fantasia" soundtrack, purchasing this album is fully justified on the basis that it contains the fully re-recorded score conducted by Hollywood composer and orchestrator Irwin Kostal, which was used in a 1980s re-release of the film. While the original Stokowski-conducted soundtrack will always fit the film better, Kostal's score stands up very well in its own right and benefits from being recorded with more advanced technology than was possible in 1940. Also included is Stokowski's recording of "Clair de Lune" by Debussy, along with narrated versions of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Peter and the Wolf" by Sterling Holloway for an old Disney children's record. Toss in some gorgeous packaging and excellent linear notes, and you've got a worthy album.
