An overweight, bullied loner is unhappily enduring a summer camp when aliens attack Earth. The camp survivors are thrown together in a locked room and gradually Pigeon becomes an unlikely leader, despite his youth (not quite 14).
This novel is set some 500 years in the future and in the ‘Legacy Fleet’ world of Nick Webb - but it’s not necessary to have read any of those titles; in fact this serves as a prequel. It is also the first of three books so the alien attack is not resolved by the end of this volume.
I enjoyed the book - it is a page-turner, as one really wants to find out what happens! Pigeon’s growth into leadership (we don’t learn his real name until right at the end - and most of the group are known only by their ‘camp’ names throughout) is not inevitable but is well-plotted. So too is the setting - beside the wilderness area where the book opens, which could well be today, we gradually learn a little about the world in the best possible way. Information is not ‘dumped’ into the narrative but emerges in a natural way so if one skips the opening notes one might almost initially be reading something set in 2016.
The author’s style is easy to read - and I’m looking forward to the other books in this series.
NOTE TO THE AUTHOR: Please, sir. I want some more!
Plot line is smooth, climaxes after climaxes, action, drama... he does it all! I look forward to reading more of pigeon!
