About the author

I grew up in the countryside in Jamaica, in Rose Hill, Summerfield, where your identify comes from your family going back several generations. So I was not only Audrey Wright, but moreso "Mr. Wright's daughter" and "Mr. Butler's granddaughter." I did my homework on the banks of the river, solitary, engrossed with the life unfolding in the water before my eyes. When I came to America, I thought the cities were all there was. So when i discovered the expanses of beauty and nature in the National Park System, I went absolutely wild.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2019Peterman traces both falling in love with national parks as well as her efforts to reach out to communities of color and create a better, more inclusive environmental movement. The resistance she races is appalling, but the strength she and her partners bring to national park and national resource issues is inspiring. This book should be required reading for all of us who love and work to protect national parks.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2015I was introduced to this book during a conversation about my personal transformation after being exposed to our American Back-Country and National Parks for extended amounts of time as a African American Black Male. Becoming an advocate and ambassador to increase both diversity and inclusion into the American Outdoor Community, recreationally, institutionally and corporate mindsets would benefit greatly by being more exposed to the information captured by Audrey and Frank Peterman. This book was a joy to read and experience, however it also punches one in the gut about the reality of our American History. Take it from there.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2012I worked in Yellowstone in the early 90's. It was a wonderful experience that made me enjoy our national park system.
However, so few blacks, latinos and other people of color would visit. Often so many fear of not being welcome. However, like the Peterman's mention in the book, the beauty of our nation belong to all and we need to see enjoy and see it!
This Peterman's book about their adventure is a great story and something that I want to do one day!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2013Overall I was impressed with their adventures around the National Park Service. This book needs to be made into a documentary.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2015Great book. I highly recommend .
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2010This handsome volume, written in scintillating prose, tells how an African American couple took up the challenge to "see America first" and just HAD to tell the rest of us what we are missing! Audrey and Frank Peterman made time to visit many of this nation's national parks and relate how the experience transformed them into environmental activists who are committed to encouraging all Americans, and especially African-Americans, to experience these national treasures and never forget that the Earth is our home. We must honor the land on which we live and preserve its essence for all generations! Special features: Appendices that list 20 official "Black" units of the National Park system, in which African-Americans significantly participated in their history, such as the African burial Ground National Monument in new York City, and a dozen other parks that reflect contributions of African-American ancestors such as: the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which includes the Presidio where the Buffalo Soldiers were once posted. This is a highly engaging memoir--part travelogue, part commentary on the biases and importance of the environmental preservation movement. It reframes arguments about why all Americans should value our collectively-owned sacred places and makes the subject appealing to people who have previously ignored these magnificent spaces or taken them for granted--like the authors did before their first trip! Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2010Every American should read this book! In fact, it should part of the reading list for school children across the country. Audrey and Frank reveal the natural wonders of this great nation with captivating storytelling and poetic descriptions. They describe the sights, sounds, smells, feelings and emotions with language so vivid I feel as though I made the journey with them!
My husband and I have been thinking about taking just such a trip and now, after reading Legacy on the Land, I am totally inspired and determined to do it!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2010This wonderfully written book chronicles the journey of one african american couple's quest to experience america's "natural" heritage our national parks. It will inspire nature lovers of all ethnic backgrounds and anyone who feels our national parks, America's public lands belong to all its citizens! It makes a wonderful gift to a road-tripping college grad looking to experience America's natural treasures before entering the work- a- day world. The book also affirmed my own feelings about nature letting me know I was not the only black person in america in love with our national parks.
