About the author

Leominster, Massachusetts is known for four things: Johnny Appleseed, a thriving plastics industry, Robert Cormier, and New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore. With over 20 million books sold worldwide, more than four dozen book and numerous game credits Salvatore has become one of the most important figures in modern epic fantasy.
A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, R.A. Salvatore, began writing shortly after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications/Media from Fitchburg State College. He penned his first manuscript in 1982, in a spiral notebook, writing by candlelight while listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk album.
Bob’s first published novel, "The Crystal Shard", was released in February of 1988. By 1990 his third book, "The Halfling’s Gem", had made the New York Times bestseller list.
Salvatore spends a good deal of time speaking to schools and library groups, encouraging people, particularly young people, to read. With the zeal of a religious convert, he talks about the virtues of reading and the ultimate appeal, “it is fun.” He remembers his return to reading when he was in college, “The blizzard of 1978 shut down my college for a week. My sister had given me a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, which I read while house-bound. When I got back to school, I changed my major from math to communications.”
Salvatore makes his home in Massachusetts, with his wife, Diane and their two dogs, Ivan and Dexter. He spends his “free time” coaching and playing softball on a team made up of family and close friends. His gaming group still meets on Sunday nights to play games. Of late, they have been playing the new game R.A.designed with Bryan Salvatore and Geno Salvatore, "DemonWars: Reformation", a role-playing game set in the World of Corona.
He is currently working on more novels set in Corona for his DemonWars series.

The common theme in these books is Drizzt's past coming back to haunt him. He has made quite a few enemies in his days on the face of Faerun and under it. Revenge is the name of the game and it appears that every one of his enemies wants a piece of the action even if they have to team up to get it. There are lots of twists and intrigue along the way and of course Salvatore's battle sequences have only gotten better. The character development that has been improving since the Dark Elf Trilogy continues here as the heroes struggle with tragic losses and their inner demons.
The only reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because of the last story Passage to Dawn. This portion of the series was poorly written with a predictable plot and little of the great characterization that makes the others so good. The final book does tie up loose ends, but I think it also undermines some of the development in the other books. Despite this weakness, the rest of the series is great and promises to draw you into the world of the drow and the surface dwellers that give them such big headaches. Buy this book you won't regret it.
If not, and this is your first, then don't buy this one but look at the timeline of the novels and select the very first chronologically.
If you still need convinced: Good story. Better characters. Lots of action and fight sequences. Unpredictability. And Darker story.
Spoiler Alert:
If you like for things to not always go well for the main characters, you will like this book.

The story takes place entirely underground, in and around Mithril Hall. Theres a little twist (if not predictable) at the beginning that runs until mid way through the book.
Drizzt's sister is determined to have her revenge and see the capture and sacrifice of him to Lloth. We see her set out with a band of Drow to Mithril Hall for this purpose and the book is pretty much covered by the ensuring fights between Drizzt and Co and the Drow. Oh....and Artemis Entreri returns...
The author has written better, and i felt the whole Artemis Entreri returning so soon after The Halfling's Gem was a bit to much. The conflict between Drizzt and Artemis was a very repetitive account of there encounter in THG.
I also thought the environment where the fight scene was covered wasn't particularly written good and felt a bit disconnected.
I don't doubt any FR fan will be disappointed, i would recommend early Drizzt novels for any virgin to FR.

The story is ok, as the was the original novel it was based on, so I can't fault there.
The artwork is very bare bones. Backgrounds are practical nonexistent and the colors are very flat.
Its not the worst thing you can read, but unless you really want to read this, I would give it a skip.

I had this book once, but lent it and lost it. Its one of my favourites of this autor and the first one i read.
