Yrsa is my favorite author, just wished her books were published more rapidly in the US. Kudos too to the translator, who did a flawless job. Highly recommended... I rate it 5+.
An intruder enters the home of a young wife and mother and brutally attacks her. She has no idea who the perpetrator is or why he has targeted her. Huldar is assigned to the case, and his sole witness is Margrét, who hid under a bed during the assault. The police enlist the aid of a child psychologist to question the seven-year-old girl, but she has little useful information to impart. Complicating matters is the fact that Huldar briefly dated Freyja, who is a consultant on the case. After the killer claims yet another victim, the members of Huldar's team frantically track down every conceivable lead. Unfortunately, without any solid evidence to point them in the right direction, it seems unlikely that they will make an arrest anytime soon. Another key figure is a twenty-three year old lonely misfit named Karl Pétursson, a slacker whose sole interest is his shortwave radio set. He is surprised, intrigued, and unsettled when someone starts transmitting bizarre coded messages to him. Who is the sender and what does he want?
Sigurðardóttir poignantly describes the loneliness of insecure and emotionally stunted people who desperately need, but fail to seek, therapeutic help. This stunning and intense work of fiction chills us to the core, with its understated but powerful descriptive writing that invokes terror, helplessness, and despair. Fortunately, there are also welcome passages of wry humor that provide a bit of relief from the grim proceedings. The shocking conclusion requires a sizeable suspension of disbelief, but the plot is so riveting that readers will be mesmerized in spite of the somewhat contrived denouement. The unusual and moving final chapter conveys essential facts and provides a small ray of hope for the future. This is the first in a promising series that should appeal to fans of complex and gritty Scandinavian thrillers.
