Lawyers are trained to work within the system. We’re not advocates for revolution. Most of us aren’t even comfortable being labelled “activists.” But when the rule of law is in peril, as it is like never before, it is our duty to not just practice law, but to protect it.

This book tells the story of 14 “legal heroes” who have responded to the crises of the Trump presidency in innovative and inspiring ways, from advocating for asylum seekers on the southern border, to defending environmental protections in the nation’s highest courts.

The creativity and sacrifice in these pages are a guide for anyone who believes in the law as a tool to fight oppression and advance the cause of freedom.

I read the advance copy of this book via book funnel. Tahmina Watson has written a captivating account of the legal heroes fighting against the Trump Administration's unjust immigration policies and human rights violations. The attention to detail in Watson's storytelling illustrates the harsh reality of immigration policies and the never-ending battle citizen-lawyers have taken upon themselves to fight those policies. Each chapter tells the story of an inspiring lawyer who has made an impact in the fight towards the ethical treatment of immigrants. Set within the context of local and national changes in politics, the chapters are both clear and engaging. These individual chapters weave together a cape of collective heroism and capture the spirit of the times. It is refreshing to read about legal and social 'wins' achieved during the Trump Era, particularly when many may struggle to hold hope during these troublesome times. While citizens, students, and even other lawyers, may watch the headlines as silent bystanders to injustice, this book shows us that we all have the power to contribute in actionable ways. 'Legal Heroes In The Trump Era' captures the essence of why it is important that we continue to fight the good fight and spread awareness to these issues.

One can't help but think the author of this book was put in just the right place at the right time in history.  As part of the team working to preemptively identify immigration policies around the Clinton administration that never was, she was in a position to pivot immediately to combat one of the most horrific immigration policies our country has ever implemented - the travel ban that went into effect right after Trump was sworn in, creating a global disturbance of historical proportions.  The coast to coast ground game that she pulled together in its wake is a master class in mobilization of community organizing and activism.  As a Mother, lawyer, radio show host and a long list of other impressive achievements she seemed to instinctively know how to draw a line between those in the legal profession who wanted to help but didn't know how, and those who needed their help - and fast. Now she can add another impressive item to her list of achievements: best selling author.  I hope people will read this book.  It is essentially the stories of lawyers like her across the country who all answered the call to go to battle for a democracy that has been under siege for nearly four years. Her story is just one of many.  One review said the book is a "page turner" or something to that effect.  I was intrigued, but not expecting to be as engaged as I was with material I am fairly unfamiliar with. The writing reminds me of some of my favorite authors i.e. Malcom Gladwell, Michael Lewis - very high on the readability meter...the ability to break down complex legal, historical, and ideological concepts and make them irresistibly readable is one heck of a gift. Highly recommend.

This is an engaging read! It flows easily from its clear premise, and legal terminology never intrudes to exclude non-specialist readers. Each of the profiles gives a picture of the real person behind the story by including life details. The author profiles a broad range of lawyers, and that gives the message – you don’t have to be unusually bright, or accomplished, or famous, or in any way a paragon in order to be a hero. Ordinary lawyers, living ordinary lives, with the resources they have, are changing the world for the better. The message that lawyers can be and should be and are the bulwark against the current administration’s attacks on constitutional and legal rights comes through beautifully.

I very much enjoyed reading this wonderful book. It beautifully captures the bravery and tenacity of true heroism in these dark and often frightening times. Every chapter is compelling and inspiring, and each story proves that anything is possible when someone is willing to fight for social and legal justice. For anyone who has felt that this country has been thrown into constant chaos and despair, this book will show them that there is hope and joy out there. I highly recommend it!

A very inspiring read about the story of people who are willing to donate their time and skills to help others. The imagination and inventiveness, demonstrated while working together to find solutions to help immigrants whose only crime is to seek a better future, was heartwarming. If you want to help make the world a better place this book will give you helpful ideas as to how to proceed. This book describes how attorneys banded together to volunteer their time and knowledge to help immigrants come to the U.S. legally and to help those in detention centers who did not know how to navigate the complex U.S. immigration system.

This is book is POWERFUL! Packed from cover to cover with stories and images that would not let me put my Kindle down. Well organized, thought out and insanely provocative. Legal Heroes is awesome! AS a person who tends to look at the negative side of lawyers, I was blown away at the impact and force with which the attorneys featured here took it upon themselves to be the force behind powerful, amazing change!
I would suggest buying this NOW!

In a time of "I tried so give it to me now", Ms. Watson helps us to remember what it is to be a true hero. Most often, being willing to work for something means being willing to fail, to get up, to try again, and to walk down dark pathways that are dark simply because the hero hasn't arrived yet. Not only is she a fine writer, but she gives us newly lit pathways the hero's circle. I loved this book!
