Through most of the book, the girls are just trying to make it through their new school, which they've all been accepted to under suspicious circumstances, and adjusting to life in San Francisco. There is a bit of romance, betrayal, a catty celebrity teen, budding friendship, a surprising amount of tragedy surrounding a certain character, and also the STRANGEST GAME OF PAINTBALL I'VE EVER READ ABOUT.
Nina Marini breathes so much life into her world and her characters, it's impossible not to get caught up into the strange and vast world of the Astorians.
•14 year olds in adult situations and feelings. Not believable.
•Hardly any character development or enough description
•No character arcs. They just end up on the other side.
•There's an abrupt end. Just when you get into a flow, it changes to another scene or activity with no rhyme or reason. It was never mentioned or led to. I literally had to go back and make sure I didn't miss anything or skipped chapters. Yep, super lost.
•Would have liked to see the other worldly side developed further in this first book otherwise it comes off as a convenience instead of an integral part of the story.
