Editorial Reviews

Review

The Legend of Hobbomock is a wonderful book providing an authentic representation of Quinnipiac tribal folklore. [Jason Marchi's] rich storytelling is a great way to introduce elementary-age children to Native American worldview and legend, and to inspire them to observe nature and the explore world around them. Highly recommended. --Dr. Kevin McBride, Director of Research, Mashantucket Pequot Museum

The Legend of Hobbomock book is magnificent...It is a GEM! --Joan & Henry Garbar, Gouldsboro, ME. (Retired teachers.)

My ten year old son Miles took the [Hobbomock] book to school yesterday and he said his teacher read it to the class and the kids applauded when she finished! He then said: It's a really good book, dad, I can't wait to see the movie! --Paul Stewart, Brighton, MA

From the Author

A young Quinnipiac Indian brave must stop an angry stone giant from destroying his village and his people. Based on a Native American legend about how a set of hills in Hamden, Connecticut came to look like a giant man sleeping on his back. The story promotes appreciation for the natural world and gets kids excited about studying Native American history, which is part of the elementary level core curriculum in the 3rd and 4th grades across the nation.

In recognition of significant contribution to American educational publishing The Legend of Hobbomock: The Sleeping Giant was selected as a Finalist in the prestigious Association of American Publishers 2015 REVERE AWARDS in the Beyond the Classroom competition for PreK-12.

Earlier, The Legend of Hobbomock: The Sleeping Giant won the Connecticut Press Club Award for Children's Fiction in 2012, and was a Mom's Choice Awards Silver Recipient in 2014.

The book, along with an 83 page Teaching/Fun Guide and audio book version are adopted as an educational package by elementary schools to fit the Core Curriculum standards for Native American studies in the 3rd and 4th grades. The book is also used in the 1st, 2nd, and 5th grades as part of an expanded curriculum.

Format: Hardcover
A beautiful book about a Native American legend, the author honors both the land and the culture in his portrayal of this story handed down through many generations. Told through the eyes of a Native American boy, along with incredible illustrations, the Sleeping Giant legend comes to life with adventure, emotion and rich history. This book will spur young readers, and even their parents, to be more curious about Native American culture and gain an awareness and appreciation for how this land was formed. A must-have for any child!

This is one of our favorite kids books in recent years about a Native American story right here in CT about a mountain that looks like a sleeping giant. We read this book to our kids and took them to see the mountain later. They love this story. I really appreciate a story about Native American folklore for kids. I hope we see more books of this kind. This is a great example of how the best kids books can entertain and teach at the same time. Highly recommended no matter where you live.

A delightful book that my children ask to be read to them often. They are very interested in learning about Native Americans and this book has helped them do that while entertaining them. The illustrations are excellent, the book's layout well done, and the story is wonderful.
