Ali could very easily have become a bitter character but Ali has embraced the finest qualities of a knight, of himself, and of the few friends who believe in him. His friendship with Alec is written very well in this book, and he is not mentioned, and then forgotten.
The romance between Alec and Peyton begins with animosity, dislike, distrust, and a very poor disguise perpetrated by Peyton and her younger sister, Ivy. Marriage agreements are made and broken, and once the nasty Warringtons arrive in the mix everything is turned into a chaotic mess.
It is a wonderful story that I will certainly re-read someday as I have already begun to miss the de Fourneys and the Summerlins.
I know it was typical of the time period for women to be considered possessions, and often treated very badly. But Alec was always thinking he loved Peyton, then immediately doing or saying something that hurt her deeply. He often treated her as if she was an idiot, who needed his help in making the smallest of decisions.
This could have been a very good book. It was just too hard for me to believe that Peyton could fall in love with a man who treated her good one minute and bad the next.
I fell in love with Alec and Peyton, I fell in love with all the characters. They all feel like my family. I can not wait to
read the next book. You can not go wrong with the purchase of this book!
In this story, what makes it modern-day is because of the introduction of a black Englishman, and also the introduction of an accepted lesbian.
The story itself is very interesting and well written. Thank you Kathryn Le Veque for the beautiful reading.
The heroine is kind of a brat at first in this book, but thankfully turns it around. I liked that they were two love stories in this book. And I especially loved the friendship between the two men. But once again as with some of her other stories I've read I was disappointed by a killing in the book. I just felt it wasn't necessary. Regardless, READ HER BOOKS. Do it now, don't wait. ;) With that said I am on to her next book!
If you arent triggered by gaslighting, bigotry and bullying -- I can acknowledge the hero is a product of the age -- you are likely to enjoy this story as much as the author's other works. I have just been spending too much time in intersectional feminist spaces to appreciate this one.
