I bought this book for my 10 year old who is in love with social studies right now. Even I found it entertaining to hear stories about Michigan that I never knew. The pictures are good and love the colors. Even though this book my be a bit too young for my 10 year old, she enjoyed it.

Great book to give to guests visiting me in Michigan. Also, great as a hostess gift when traveling abroad. I also have my copy in the guest room on the bed side table for visitors to read. The story and the illustrations are wonderful.

This book is excellent for anyone who loves Michigan, Native American Legends, or a good, heartfelt fable. Appropriate for ages 5 through 12--children pay attention when this young boy, in an attempt to save his people from the cold/certain death, goes in search of the Winter Spirit who keeps it so cold. The binding is quality, The illustrations cover the entire page, the story is touching. It gives a spiritual (Native American) explanation for why Michigan is shaped like a mitten. It teaches perseverance and kindness in the face of stubbornness and conceited power. I live an area of Michigan in which families from other countries come to live & work for the auto makers. When these families from Japan, Germany, South America, France, and Britain move back home, I give this as a gift, and EVERY family has fallen in love with it. It's a source of pride for this treasure of a state.

Long, long ago, the ancient people of the forest gathered around the warm fires and told the tale of a time long past, when the land known as "Michigane" was covered with ice and snow. For thousands of years the cruel North Wind ruled the land North of Up North, chasing away the gentle, benevolent winds from the East, West and South. Winter stayed the whole year round, so nothing could live in Michigane. Not until an old warrior and a young boy traveled throught the frigid cold with nothing but warm hearts and an old pair of mittens was there hope that the frozen land would eventually come to life.

Storyteller Trinka Hakes Noble pays homage to her home state in this creative and inventive legend of the orgin of the state of Michigan
