Behind the Story

My mother loved to read.  In 1996, I asked her for a list of all her favorite things in a book.  It was eclectic!  I wanted to do something special just for her.  She'd always been so supportive of my writing, so  I set out to create a single book that contained every single thing on her list.  This story, Legend of the Mist, is the result.

The book first released in 1997 (Festival).  My mother was hospitalized for nearly six months.  I feared she'd never see this book I'd written for her, but a very determined editor worked a miracle and got a copy to me.  Mom couldn't read anymore by then, so I read it to her.  Sitting beside her hospital bed, I read and I had the rare privilege of seeing her every facial expression and emotional reaction.  She truly did love this odd duck, as did I, and watching her reactions, I felt as if I'd conquered the world.

That is a time now burned into my memory and stored in the secret chambers of my heart, deeply treasured.

It was the last book she read before she died.

I set out to give her a gift.  Instead, I received yet another one, a very special one, from her.

Have you ever read a book so captivating and so sensuous that it leaves you wanting more? This is hands down one of the best books I've read this year and has earned a place on my favorites list as well as my heart. I'm kicking myself because I didn't read this book sooner. It's so very well written and from the moment I started reading this, I was ensnared. Vicki Hinze talents sparkle. Her characters are riveting and positively delightful. The dialogue is crisp and enticing and the plot setup is intriguing.

The main characters are Catherine (Catie) Morgan & James (Jamie) Cameron. They have such a unique romance and the banter between them is superb. Ms. Hinze puts her heart and soul into each character and it shows. The secondary characters were interesting and engaging in their own right. ;)

This is a time travel romance. I'm very into that genre if it has anything to do with the heroine going back in time to Scotland. Catie does finally go but it's more toward the end of the book and it's only for a short time. I found myself wishing my husband was more like Jamie. :) Seriously, he's amazing! I loved his character and the way he spoke.

This book's got it all: action, suspense, romance, and mystery. I didn't want it to end. I hope that Ms. Hinze writes another book like this in the near future. It's so rare to find someone that writes this well and that can capture such rich emotion throughout a story.

Vicki Hinze should be ranked at the top with Karen Marie Moning and Diana Gabaldon! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves time travel romance. ;)

This is a new author for me & it takes a lot to tear me away from my old favs. Once I started reading, however, I had to read it straight through. If you're looking to lose yourself in a captivating story, give this a shot.

I really liked the characters in this novel as well as the premise of the story but was disappointed with the delivery. The dialog constantly left me scratching my head. This is a mystery/romance and a lot of the mystery, for me, was unraveling the conversations between the hero and heroine. Normally I enjoy snappy banter between the characters, and there is plenty in the story. Maybe too much. It felt like all they did was exchange cute quips and insults. The constant reference to "repaying" each other for either insulting his Scottish heritage or her "Yank" heritage became old after about the 500th time. I would have liked to see a few more "normal" conversations between the two. There was a lot of Scottish symbolism thrown in which was interesting and confusing at the same time. At one point, James, the main character, confronts the other three lairds with the fact that his "ally", another overused term in the book, was left with a thistle on her pillow. This seems to be very important, more important (spoiler alert) than the fact that the following evening she was attacked in her bedroom. He never brings this up with the lairds nor does the author explain why. All this banter and mystery leads to a short time travel episode at the end of the book and a confusing ending. Did he or didn't he? I know it sounds like I hated the book but I didn't. It was entertaining but I was left with unanswered questions.

I rarely write reviews...but this book was so wonderful that I had to write One.
The characters transported me to another place....I was totally absorbed in this story. I just could not put the book down. I wish the author would write a follow up book.
Maybe bring back the various Lairds and their stories.
PLEASE WRITE MORE OF THESE SCOTTISH ROMANCES!
I am ready to book a vacation there.
I love when an author portrays a woman as smart and independent ....clever and kind.
Catherine has a wonderful story to share....Buy this book and enjoy her journey.
You will be happy you did.

What a great story. Vicki Hinze writes such a captivating story! I love the time travel genre, and she really sets up the story line so that it leaves you wanting for more! I could not put the book down, and when I got to the end, I felt like I really knew Catie, and her Jamie! I was also sorry to reach the end of this book. I loved the action, suspense, romance, and mystery. I didn't want it to end. I would highly recommend this book!

I absolutely loved this book and truly think it deserves the 5 stars. I could not put this book down. I haven't read a book that captivating in a long time. However, I am glad I am not the only one left with questions at the end. Those people are right, the ending was short....like it was cut off. There was no epilogue to explain all the questions you had. Assuming that Jamie is James when Catie goes back in time ( based on the white streak) Then why wouldn't he tell her so she knew she wasn't alone? How could he be Jamie and James at the same time? Where was the real James? How could Jamie go back to the future and fly her flag, have a painting of him with her medallion on and act like he was there waiting for her in the future all along? So many unanswered questions that I found myself trying to google the ending I thought must be missing from the version I downloaded. It's such a good book I can't get it from my mind but how I wish I knew for sure what happened!
