Legend of Sumeria interweaves emotional storylines, vivid artwork, and technical sketches to draw the reader into a complicated web of human drama and scientific intrigue. #Followthesymbol
Life· Blood · DNA is the first volume in the hard science fiction trilogy created by Jay Webb and Biju Parekkadan, PhD. The science-art collaboration features a space colonization story, a search for mysterious symbol, and future genetic technologies that will test your definition of ethics.
The fascinating integration of human genetics into everyday society raises questions of humanity, spirituality, and the bonds of love. The machinations of a powerful biotech company which launches SEQ (pronounced 'seek'), the first social network to integrate genetics into the fabric of society and e-commerce, drop the reader into an eerily feasible future. "It's not just the next internet, it's life by your own code," reads one SEQ tag line.
An unethical experiment activates a "cancer" gene that alters human evolution forever. It may be more than just human evolution that is in danger when Tessa Jones shepherds a space expedition that encounters a fascinating tribe of extraterrestrial "silverbacks" that lead a nomadic, subsistent life contrary to human society. A professor of biomedical engineering who was awarded a Presidential Early Career Scientist Award by President Obama, Parekkadan's scientific expertise lends authenticity to the real science sketches throughout Legend of Sumeria while Webb's film-making background is evidenced in the superb world building that will absorb sci-fi fans.

"Hard hitting and intricately plotted...this book is phenomenal."

From the Author
This all sounds a bit ambitious of course, but it all begins with collaboration and creating something you believe to be important. When you set out to create something that you think has a chance to make a difference, that creation always has the chance to inspire others to do the same. To me, that is what life is all about. Create with positive influence in mind...the creation hopefully makes at least one person happy or inspires at least one person to create with positive influence in mind themselves...rinse, have a beer, and repeat.
Biju and I hope most readers can find some part of the book that inspires them to look up some science, smile a little, or to just think for a moment about where we are all headed as a population.

I was recommended this book by a good friend who loves graphic novels. Myself, being a graphic novel neophyte, was a touch hesitant from the start. Quickly after diving in that hesitation vanished and gave way to a compelling story rich in character, exposition and a climax which I thought was kick ass.
Story - Having never really read a graphic novel before I wasn’t sure what to expect. In addition, due to the books non-linear flow it took a chapter for me to get my bearings. After I knew where to look to figure out where and when I was in the story everything flowed quite nicely.
The story is set in a dystopian future where our genetic code and dna are used to pretty much predestine all of our day to day lives. Everything from the parties you can attend to the movies you’ll go see - all of it linked to your code. A pretty wild concept. All of it controlled by participation in the “Seq (pronounced seek - like sequence ha!) Network”. On top of this there has been a medication called tigris which is a cure all to most of the worlds ailments. But supplies are low and there is a new strain of disease that Tigris isn’t curing. We follow Dr. Abbot in a downward spiral of sorts that leads him to realizations and discoveries that are crucial for the future of human existence.
Obviously there are some typical sci-fi tropes - although none them felt overly forced. A villainous business man who is more focused on greed than compassion to fellow man. A beautiful and mysterious female who uses her sexuality to her advantage to pull the strings of puppet like men. An ex-athlete who switches gears and leads an expedition to a far away place to get answers. A disgraced FBI Semiotician who goes on his own quest for knowledge predicated on finding the origins of a mysterious symbol. Lots of stuff to dive into character wise. I felt that the character arcs were unforced and natural.
There was one plot line that took us on an intergalactic mission. At first I was wondering how it would tie in but as I continued I feel that we are reading just one part of a much larger story so I await the next installment to find out more about this. As far as the story goes, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.
Science - There are a bunch of really far out concepts in this book. I think the authors did a great job putting things in laymen’s terms the best that they could without cheapening the science. There are great devices separating each chapter which offer some explanation as well as add to the overall exposition. Some read like newspaper articles, some like ads, overall I just thought it was all pretty darn interesting and cool. And I’m not much of a science guy.
Art - Here is my favorite part of this book as a whole and where my respect goes out wholeheartedly to the people that played a part in creating it. Something really cool is that they had different artists assist in the drawing of each section. They include bios and fun facts about each individual artist in the page preceding their chapters. I thought this was really really cool. The illustrations are consistent throughout each section for the most part. Although there are a few times where a characters overall look will differ slightly from a previous chapter, who cares. I love the fact that these authors got multiple people involved and it really adds to the overall experience of reading the book.
Overall I would recommend The Legend of Sumeria to anyone who enjoys graphic novels as well as fact based hard sci-fi. It’s a compelling story with interesting characters and a lot of interesting science.
I can’t wait to read more graphic novels now. Also I hope there is another book in this series!
Highly recommend for both the reasons above and the excellent artistic design and production from the debut authors.
Worth the buy!
