A Nice Companion to Go with the Basic Game

In a game that has a world as expansive as this one I would say that having access to content that is typical of official guides is a must. This game has several NPCs to interact with as well as sidequests. There is also plenty of hidden treasure to be found. Thus, having a detailed map to refer to (as was included in this guide) as well as detailed strats. to complete sidequests and what not was very nice to have on hand. The only reason I mark the guide down is because it did not cover DLC content (which there was quite a bit of). However, I do believe an updated guide was released that covered both the initial game and it's subsequent DLC releases, though. I can't imagine trying to navigate a game of this size without a guide and for that reason I recommend having one. I also get how game guide publishers have been criticized for not covering DLC content in their guides since it is not available when the game is released. I have found that to be a relatively minor issue for myself up to this point, however, I will admit that in this instance it would have been nice to have some official strats. to supplement my experience with the DLC.

While the majority of the guide is fairly organized and well thought out, it has a number of issues. Some of the minor issues are things like having Lake Saria named as Lake Salia. As you get in deeper to the shrine guide, you'll soon learn that quite a few of them have the rewards for the shrine completely wrong.

While in most cases, this is not an issue, if you're looking for something like the Climbing Boots it becomes more of problem (until you complete all of the shrines), because the boots were in an entirely different shrine than where it said it was.

The poster map that comes with it looks a bit different than the in game map and is a little too dark. The Korok map could've expanded a bit more on the harder to locate ones, as the few pictures provided are sometimes hard to recognize. A simple icon that estimates how high or low a Korok is would help tremendously. It still gets the job done for the most part though (especially the shrine map) and looks wonderful.

They could've listed page numbers on the inventory items section that helped you locate where specific items were in the game. For example, the Hylian Shield. If you look up shields in the table of contents, it takes you to a page full of the listed shields with information about them. However, it just says "Hyrule Castle (Lockup)" only. It has plenty of space to list a page number with more info on the Hylian shield, so there was no reason not to include them. It's particularly difficult because the Hyrule Castle map changes into a 3D map instead of an overhead map, so you're not sure where the Lockup is located. Not only that, but the Lockup is not the only place to get the shield, and it neglected to even mention that. When it breaks, you're supposed to be able to buy it from some vendor.

Overall, I like it, despite its many flaws. Just like the game, the good outweighs the bad.

I'd give it 4.5 stars. It's not as nice as the set made by Prima when Twilight Princess HD was released. It is a thick book, which makes sense given the amount of everything to do in the game. However, I found the amount of information it provides to be a little thin, which is kind weird to say for a ~370-page book. In prior Zelda books, there would be details on the different weapons whereas in this one it simply provides a list of the weapons with basic details. A lot of this is again due to the fact there are much more weapon options. But I kinda wish there was more details on the best situations to use them. It has a ton of data, but it just feels shallow. I'm an experienced gamer and so I don't need it for the walkthrough, mostly. Which is why I'm disappointed it is thin on the extra details. That being said, the walkthrough is competent, if not a tad dull.

I'd say my biggest complaint is it looks and feels like a college textbook, not a game guide. From the build to the graphics, all of this says "Zelda 201" and not "guide to adventure." It uses small images and tiny font that makes it hard to read if your vision is poor. The white pages strain the eyes in bright light, especially if you've been running around in the dark on the game.

The included map is double sided, which is nice because you can choose to have all of the items marked or simply the major locations. It's massive, though and not something you can quickly reference. I kinda wish they had a smaller version

I removed another half star for it showing up a week after its release despite me preordering it as soon as it was listed on Amazon. Thus the 4-star rating.

Having used this for hours upon hours whilst playing the game, I think I have to say that this is a must-have purchase. We would have enjoyed playing Breath of the Wild anyway but there is no question that the addition of this guide has increased our enjoyment tenfold. If you have played Zelda games before then you will know how difficult they can be and, although we like to be challenged, having this guide has definitely mitigated any frustration we might have felt whilst playing and this is only a good thing. The layout of the guide is superb and so if you need help with certain parts of the game but want to try by yourself with other parts then this guide gives you the flexibility to do that. The maps are invaluable and the instructions are not only clear, but they also refrain from spoiling anything (for example, they will help you locate treasure chests, but never reveal what is inside them). It also looks good on the bookshelf!

I have to say I did not buy the book before playing quite a bit - it is an additional expense with the DLS, amiibos, not to mention Switch/game - but I have to say it is very much worth it.

In fairness - if you are stuck for ideas on what to do in the game - one of the many "let's play" videos give you plenty of information too (I find they send me to sleep) but having something printed you can refer to is much nicer. As the game is so beautiful - the many screen-shots are great too not to mention the many models.

I do think that perhaps you should not read ahead before you discover that specific part of the game - so that you discover the new things yourself - and then refer to the book for things you have missed or if you really get stuck/lost.

I've finished the current main story, and am cracking on with working for 100%, so this guide has been brilliant for Korok seeds, locations and missing photos. I never usually want to fully complete a game, but I'm so in love with Breath of the Wild, it had to be done! This guide is the ideal gift for any fan, even if they have finished the game, as there's so much detail and artwork contained. It's beautifully made and clear to use!

Highly recommended for any BotW player :)
