This was so well made. I love it. Thank you for making this.

The pictures are mostly post concept and pre to early in-engine modeling, with actual finalized models and art from within the game. When hearing the title "creating a champion" I was thinking it was going to be A LOT of conceptual stuff but was wrong. There are very few iterations of things in the book and it more focuses on the honing aspects of design they did to make everything come together. I was hoping for some intense character decisions or ideas but for this book they were all finalized and they just showed how they looked like in game. I actually really liked what they did for most of the buildings/overview areas where they took an in-engine screenshot, then painted or drew over extra lines, towers, etc. for changes. It's really cool seeing them do stuff like that and I rarely see it. I loved the Zora areas personally. There wasn't too much of the divine beasts and ancient mechanisms sadly, they were in there but I was really hoping too see a bunch of decision making and fancy art on them since they are totally new to the Zelda franchise but all that was there was overview and general ideas on them.
The best part of this book is the commentary on nearly every page. Every design had some note or comment on them and every major part of the book has a little excerpt from a director or producer describing what they wanted. They simply add little tidbits of info and provide really great insight into what team leads and art director do and how aspects of games become final. I just love the tiny comments like "raise the tooths and make the tarps shorter to make them flap less" on an image. There are longer dialogues at the end of the book with the major devs like Eiji Aonuma and the art director that are a great read. I really love the portion of the book that is the history of Breath of the wild. It completely breezes over the old timelines and tells you what happens in this game lore wise. It's basically all falvor text and really fun to see how every tribe was affected by the calamity.
The book itself has thick, nice pages (Dark Horse always does an amazing job) and is a fantastic length. The cover however, isn't a normal hardback. it is slightly softer and has one of those mesh/felt bindings around it. Not being a sturdy hardback, it does bend fairly easily. I had it on my lap for less than an hour and noticed the cover already bent slightly (see photo) and the book didn't close flat. I simply put some weight on the book after use to straighten it back out. I would recommend either taking great care when looking at it or using a flat surface like a desk for flipping through it. In addition to the cover, it isn't the same vibrant royal blue as the rest of the collection (see photo), it is a faded softer blue, not like the product picture. Not that big of a deal after thinking about it in my opinion as it mixes up the case contrast just enough to still be acceptable. May be a turn off for some people but the rest of the case and things are the special blue.
There was this really weird spot in the book (see photo) where some pages were creased down the entire length, this went on for about 10 pages and then abruptly stopped. Quite odd and there was no indication for them anywhere else in the book.
The map it comes with is a nice felt material attached on a thick poster like paper. I looks nice and is large. The portrait was smaller than I expected based off the product image, it is around 6X11, but comes in a little case for display. The spirit orb is a cute little addition.
Overall, it is a nice, well put together book that had a lot of thought put into it. There was just too many little things that made me put this to 4 stars, honestly I would put it at 4.5 but can't do that :/. I would highly recommend this to any big Zelda fan, one that has other books like the Hyrule Historia or likewise, or just to someone who's a fan of collectible video game stuff.
