Editorial Reviews

La Stupenda, as audiences called Joan Sutherland, was for many seasons the most famous dramatic coloratura soprano in the
world, adored by audiences and record collectors for her numerous merits. This stunning box set of 15 discs includes a selection of
her best performances, including (among other treasures) a live 1961 performance of Bellini rarity Beatrice Di Tenda, Meyerbeer s
brilliant masterpiece Les Huguenots with an all-star cast, and the 1955 broadcast of the world premiere of Tippett s The Midsummer
Marriage one of the most legendary documents in the history of modern opera!

These are all live performances from Sutherland's prime, with the exception of the early Tippett recording. This, however, doesn't seem to have been the rubric for which operas to include as much as which recordings the Allegro Corporation (i.e. Opera d'Oro) had on hand. All of these operas have been released by Opera d'Oro, but there's now no reason to buy them seperately when this set includes just as much documentation as the original releases but at a fraction of the price.

1961 Beatrice di Tenda - Sound: Good. Excellent La Scala performance, but not nearly as compelling as her debut a few months earlier.
1962 Les Huguenots - Sound: Good. With cuts and not nearly as much Sutherland as one would like, but still a worthy recording. Still, the 1969 studio recording is the place to go for this opera.
1955 The Midsummer Marriage - Sound: Fair. A Sutherland novelty. Tippett added extra coloratura when he learned JS was creating the role of Jenifer, but this small bonus doesn't make up for a bizarre plot and the presence of a radio narrator.
1969 Norma - Sound: Very Good. Unlike the original release, this performance is pitched correctly. Cossotto is an indulgent Adalgisa, but JS is great.
1967 Orfeo ed Euridice - Sound: Good to Very Good. Interesting Haydn opera; one of JS's few preserved performances with Nicolai Gedda.
1959 Rodelinda - Sound: Poor. Divine but with awful sound. Check out my review on the original release for more info.

This set lets you hear Joan Sutherland in the beauty and strength of her youthful voice, something less evident in the commercial recordings she made later and her videotaped performances with Opera Australia. None of the productions in the box is a standout, however, unlike some other sets in this excellent series. This set also offers two rarities: Haydn's "Orfeo ed Euridice," a rather dull work compared to Gluck's, and Tippett's "Midsommer Marriage." This recording lacks the orchestral sparkle of some versions. Even so, the 15 CD set is a collector's dream.

Wonderful collection of 7 operas in live performances from the prime years of her career. These are exciting performances and quite a bargain. For me, Sutherland is the greatest, since I heard her in my first live opera performance from behind a pole in the balcony of the old Met in NYC at age 14. That was in 1962 and these recordings bring back all the magic of her powers at that stage of her career.
